Police on Monday recorded the arrest of right-wing political commentator T G Mohandas over remarks he allegedly made in a YouTube video about a student protest in New Delhi over the NEET paper leak, officials said. Mohandas was taken into custody from his residence in Koovapadam in Kochi on Sunday. Officials said Mohandas was brought to the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station around midnight, where his arrest was formally recorded. He will be produced before the concerned magistrate court later in the day, officials said. The police team collected information about his YouTube account and seized digital devices allegedly used to create and upload the video, officials said. The seized gadgets will be presented before the court and sent for forensic analysis, officials said. Police officials said they are looking to add more charges against Mohandas after conducting further investigation. Cybercrime police in Hyderabad have registered cases against operators of several Facebook and Instagram accounts and parent company Meta’s India head over allegedly morphed and objectionable content targeting PM Narendra Modi during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led NEET paper leak agitation. According to the FIR, a complaint was received on July 29 at 7:40 PM from T Saikiran Goud, 32, Social Media CC Member, BJP Telangana, and resident of Dr SP Mookerjee Bhavan, opposite Exhibition Ground, Nampally, Hyderabad. In the complaint, Goud stated that while surfing social media on July 29 at 2:00 PM, he came across reels and posts that were allegedly derogatory towards the Prime Minister of India and appeared to promote narratives prejudicial to national integrity. The complainant listed 20 URLs of Instagram and Facebook reels and posts and requested an investigation. The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the release of student protesters who are below 18 years of age and have no criminal record, while restraining authorities from taking coercive action against eligible protesters in connection with the recent nationwide agitation over the alleged NEET paper leak. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, issued a series of interim directions while hearing petitions alleging police excesses during the demonstrations. SC orders preservation of digital evidence The apex court directed all states where protests were held to preserve electronic and digital evidence related to the demonstrations. The order covers CCTV footage, drone recordings, body-camera footage, wireless communication records, Police Control Room (PCR) logs and other digital material linked to the protests.
