Kin of deceased Nepalese student at KIIT University demands `thorough probe`

Two days after a Nepalese student was found dead at the KIIT University in Bhubaneswar, a kin of the deceased on Saturday urged authorities for a thorough investigation, and said that the girl student had shown no signs of distress before her death. Speaking to ANI, Rajesh Ranjan, the relative of the deceased, said that the victim`s post-mortem examination was underway and that the family of the student would cremate the mortal remains in Puri. Sharing information, Ranjan said that the girl had recently spoken to her father and was looking forward to returning home. “She asked her father to book a ticket to come back. She was happy to have finished her exam. There were no signs of depression,” Ranjan said. Describing her as “bright, ambitious, and courageous,” Ranjan emphasised that the student would have communicated with her parents had she been facing any difficulty. “People are interpreting it wrongly,” he said, urging the public to refrain from drawing premature conclusions. The UGC panel has been asked to submit the fact-finding report within 10 days. The incident comes after the suicide of Prakriti Lamsal, another Nepalese student of the same institute on February 16. New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday formed a fact-finding committee to look into consecutive student suicides at KIIT-Bhubaneshwar. The UGC in a statement said that the panel was constituted after a 20-year-old Nepalese student of the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room. “UGC has constituted a Fact-Finding Committee under the Chairmanship of Prof. Nageshwar Rao, Former VC, IGNOU to look into the students’ suicide cases at KIIT, Bhubaneswar and suggest measures to prevent such incidents in future,” said UGC Secretary Manish Joshi. Bhubaneswar: The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha has announced a scholarship in memory of Prakriti Lamsal, the 20-year-old Nepalese student of the private engineering institute who died allegedly by suicide at her hostel room on February 16, leading to unrest on the campus. The announcement was made by KIIT and KISS founder Achyuta Samanta on Wednesday, who met the deceased student’s father and uncle, offering his deepest condolences, according to a statement issued by the institute. “A scholarship would be instituted in Lamsal’s name as a tribute to her memory,” Mr Samanta said.
