A long history of association and knowledge exchange between renowned chemists and institutes at Hyderabad and Germany, came to fruition as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Hyderabad and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research-Hyderabad launched their partnership with Germany’s Heidelberg University (HU) on Monday. The Indo-German initiative named Heidelberg-Hyderabad Hub in Advanced Chemical Education (H3ACE) kickstarted with the participation of HU’s vice presidents Andreas Dreuw and Katja Patzel-Mattern with their five professors and 17 Master students joining 17 professors and 40 students from various institutions, including IIT-H, TIFR-H, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, and University of Hyderabad — at the start of the five-day school on Computational Chemistry being held on IITH campus on Monday. A 36-year-old man with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare nerve condition, died in a civic-run hospital in Maharashtra`s Pune district on Friday, bringing the state`s total of suspected GBS deaths to three, officials said, PTI reported. Officials claimed that the patient, who was employed as a taxi driver, was admitted on January 21 to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri Chinchwad. “An expert committee at YCMH conducted an investigation and concluded that the cause of the death was trauma to the respiratory system due to pneumonia, leading to severe difficulty in breathing,” the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation said in a release, PTI cited. As per PTI, the committee highlighted that the patient had also been diagnosed with GBS, with a “nerve conduction test” done on him on January 22. The immediate cause of the death was identified as severe “acute respiratory distress syndrome” (ARDS), it said. Pune, A man suspected to have contracted Guillain-Barré syndrome has died in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, while the number of cases of the immunological nerve disorder in Pune rose to 110, health officials said on Monday. The 40-year-old man, a native of Solapur, had come to Pune, where he is believed to have contracted the disease, according to officials. State Health Minister Prakash Abitkar confirmed the death. “The patient, suffering from symptoms like breathlessness, weakness in lower limbs, and diarrhoea, was admitted to a private hospital on January 18 as he was on ventilator support on and off.
