The Leiden copper plates, recently returned to India, are a vital record of Chola history

When the priceless Chola bronzes from Sivapuram and Pathur villages in Tamil Nadu were returned to India in 1986 and 1991 after protracted legal battles in the U.S. and U.K., it created a sensation. A formidable team of experts from diverse fields helped repatriate the bronzes after they were smuggled abroad. On February 17, 1988, Justice Ian Kennedy of a London court, awarding the idol to Tamil Nadu, praised R. Nagaswamy, who testified in the case, as “an acknowledged expert in the field of Chola bronzes.” Then Director of the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology, Nagaswamy was an epigraphist, iconographer, archaeologist, and scholar of Tamil and Sanskrit. It was celebration time again for epigraphists and scholars of Chola history when Leiden University in the Netherlands handed over the Anaimangalam copper-plate charter, popularly known as the Leiden plates, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at The Hague on May 16, 2026. Netherlands returns Chola-era copper plates to India during Modi’s visit | India News

1 min readUpdated: May 16, 2026 03:01 PM IST The Netherlands has returned the 11th-century Anaimangalam copper plates to India. The plates are among the most important surviving records of the Chola dynasty. The return marks a major step in bringing back cultural artefacts taken during the colonial period. The development comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the Netherlands as part of his five nation tour. As per Customs Department, the Anaimangalam Copper plates are a pair of twenty one large plates and three small plates. The large plates were issued in honour of the great Chola King Rajaraja’s grants to a Buddhist vihara built at the Chola port town of Nagappattinam in Tamilnadu by Chulamanivarman, the Sailendra King of Southeast Asia.  It appears that Kulothunga Chola, supposedly a descendant of the Eastern Chalukya dynasty, preferred the term sunkam which was widely prevalent in Deccan at that time.    Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here.
