‘Heavy Rush’ At Delhi Railway Station But ‘No Stampede’: Officials

New Delhi: Heavy passenger congestion due to delay in the departure of multiple trains led to chaos at the New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday but there was “no stampede” or “stampede-like” situation, Railway officials said. According to the police, no injury was reported. However, there was an extra rush at platform numbers 12 and 13 due to delay departure of a few trains. Senior officials like Senior Commandant RPF and Station Director NDLS are present at the station for better management, a senior official from Railway board said. There was heavy rush but no stampede or stampede like situation at NDLS, the railway official said, adding that protocol of taking unreserved passengers through holding area is being used. Now, a few trains have left and the situation is under control, the police said. Passengers were seen scaling the barricades and jumping queue. New Delhi: The New Delhi Railway Station continued to witness a surge in crowd more than 12 hours after at least 18 people, mostly women and children, died in a stampede while waiting to board trains to Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh festival is being hosted. More police personnel have now been deployed to the platforms and ropes are being used to regulate the crowds after the incident, which took place around 10 pm on Saturday. “There was a lot of rush at the platform numbers 12, 15 and 16. There is no such crowd usually,” a man who had a shop at the station told NDTV. In view of the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that left at least 18 dead including women and children, the Railways in a press release on Sunday said that nine trains scheduled to run from Delhi have been cancelled out of which seven trains were going to Prayagraj. The time of one train going to Prayagraj has been rescheduled.    The stampede occurred during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday when passengers, most of them travelling to Prayagraj’s Mahakumbh, crowded in the train platforms.
