Maharashtra: Gadchiroli Police seize contraband worth Rs 5 lakh

In a major drive against illegal activities, the Gadchiroli Police conducted a special ‘Operation All Out’ and combing operation across Gadchiroli, Armori, and Chamorshi police station limits on Wednesday. During the operation, 13 cases were registered against illegal liquor trade, and contraband worth Rs 5,00,700 was seized. As part of the combing operation, 139 history-sheeters and known criminals were checked. The drive was conducted under the guidance of Superintendent of Police M Ramesh and led by Additional SP Aniket Hirde. Police teams from Gadchiroli, Armori, and Chamorshi stations carried out raids at various locations, including hotels, lodges, and secluded spots. As many as 300 vehicles were checked during nakabandi, and action was taken against 40 vehicles under the Motor Vehicles Act. To facilitate the travel of lakhs of devotees expected to attend Ashadhi Wari 2026 in Pandharpur, the Solapur Division of Central Railway has announced 54 special train trips connecting the pilgrimage town with various parts of Maharashtra. Ashadhi Ekadashi, one of Maharashtra’s most significant religious occasions, will be observed on July 25. Every year, lakhs of Warkaris converge on Pandharpur to offer prayers at the Vitthal-Rukmini temple. In a press release issued on Thursday, Central Railway said it will operate a mix of reserved and unreserved special trains from Nagpur, New Amravati, Khamgaon, Bhusaval, Latur, Kolhapur, Pune, and Miraj to cater to the increased passenger demand during the annual pilgrimage. Reserved special trains Nagpur-Miraj Ashadhi Specials (Four trips) Train No 01205 will depart Nagpur at 8.50 am on July 23 and July 24 and arrive at Miraj at 11.55 am the following day. Chhattisgarh jail violence: Inmate attacked with cement slab, dies in hospital

An undertrial prisoner was allegedly killed by a triple-murder convict in Bilaspur Central Jail in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday morning, police said, reported PTI.  Nilu Jagat (25), the deceased, had been lodged in jail since 2024 following his arrest in a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act case. “The incident took place at 9:32 am in Barrack E-1. Rajesh Rai, a life convict serving a sentence in a triple murder case since 2008, allegedly attacked Jagat with a heavy cement drain cover, striking him on the head multiple times,” said Jail Superintendent Khomesh Mandavi. Other inmates overpowered the accused, following which Jagat was rushed to the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences, where he succumbed to his injuries three hours later, the official said, reported PTI.  “The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. Jail authorities have launched an internal probe and are questioning the accused inmate as well as other prisoners who witnessed the incident,” Mandavi added. Days after a gang assaulted a motorcyclist and robbed him of Rs 23,000 cash in Beed district of Maharashtra, police have arrested four of its members, officials said on Tuesday. The incident had occurred near Samnapur village on the Dhule-Solapur highway on Beed Bypass Road in the early hours of June 16, news agency PTI reported, quoting officials. The complainant, 42-year-old Radheshyam Nandlal Parikh, was riding his motorcycle from Pali in Beed tehsil towards Beed when four unidentified men intercepted him around 2.30 am. They assaulted him and robbed Rs 23,000 cash he was carrying, before fleeing, an official said. Based on a complaint, a case was registered with the Beed Rural police station under section 309 (6) (robbery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The local crime branch launched a probe and examined the CCTV footage. Acting on a tip-off, the team identified the prime suspect as Avezkhan Parvezkhan (25), a resident of the Barshi Naka area.
