After week-long critical care, Telangana excise constable Gajula Sowmya passes away at NIMS

Gajula Sowmya, a 25-year-old Telangana excise constable who sustained serious injuries in an alleged attack by ganja smugglers in Nizamabad, passed away at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, on the night of Saturday, January 31. A bulletin issued by NIMS late Saturday night said, “All necessary medical interventions and advanced life-support measures were provided by a multi-disciplinary team of specialists. Despite sustained and best possible efforts, the patient could not be revived and was declared deceased on 31st January 2026 at 9.41 p.m. NIMS extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and conveys its sincere sympathies during this hour of profound grief.” Sowmya was initially brought to NIMS in the early hours of January 25 and was admitted to the Emergency Department before being shifted to the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit. Increasing patient footfall at NIMS highlights Hyderabad’s growing healthcare demands

Hyderabad’s Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is witnessing a surge in outpatient visits, underscoring both the increasing demand for quality healthcare and the hospital’s expanding capabilities. With an outpatient (OP) footfall of 9.2 lakh in 2024, a 39% increase from the 6.6 lakh patients recorded in 2022, NIMS has become a crucial pillar in the State’s medical landscape. As per a release from the NIMS Faculty Association, the surge in patient numbers has led to a corresponding rise in surgical procedures, with medical departments now handling more complex cases than before. Cutting-edge procedures such as transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) surgeries, advanced spinal cord stimulation surgeries, and organ transplants have become routine at NIMS. Additionally, the institute has cemented its status as a leading centre for diagnosing and treating genetic disorders while operating one of the largest dialysis units in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. NIMS Medical Genetics Department: A beacon of hope for rare disease patients

Established in collaboration with the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), the department has been providing state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic services for over a decade. The department treats a spectrum of rare conditions, including Gaucher Disease, Homocystinuria, Growth Hormone Deficiency, Methylmalonic Acidemia, Wilson Disease, Phenylketonuria, and Pompe Disease, among others. The NIMS Medical Genetics department was founded in 2008 as the second such department in a government institution in India. In recognition of its outstanding contributions, it was designated as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in 2021 under the National Policy for Rare Diseases by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
