El Niño will particularly lead to above-normal temperatures across much of the world and drive significant shifts in rainfall patterns during August to October. During the later months of the year, exceptionally warm conditions will prevail over all the oceans and there is a likely development of positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions. Together, these oceanic drivers could amplify regional climate impacts and lead to drought, floods and wildfires, particularly around the Indian ocean basin. Vengadesh The Tamil Nadu government has formed an Expert Advisory Committee to monitor and assess the potential impact of a possible strong El Niño weather phenomenon this year and advise the government on preparedness and mitigation measures. A Government Order issued to this effect by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department on July 28, 2026 said the Expert Advisory Committee has been constituted to assess the potential impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon on a scientific basis and recommend appropriate precautionary and disaster mitigation measures. Functions The committee will monitor rainfall and drought conditions, identify vulnerable areas, and advise the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency on early warning systems. It will also advise the government on drought and flood mitigation measures in vulnerable areas to ensure adequate preparedness. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Mr. Chouhan said the rainfall so far has been around 43% below normal. The Centre has assessed that 315 districts are vulnerable and 111 districts in 12 States are of primary concern due to poor irrigation facilities. “We are preparing in advance. Not waiting for a crisis,” the Minister said adding that each 315 district will have a contingency plan to face the climatic challenge. Agriculture Ministers of States, senior officials, district collectors of vulnerable regions, experts from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and officials of the Union Agriculture Ministry and the Indian Meteorological Department attended the meeting. With the southwest monsoon expected to be weak because of El Niño conditions, several farmer-producer organisations (FPO) are promoting drought-resistant crops and climate-resilient farm practices, while officials say the Union Ministry of Agriculture is stepping up preparations to tackle the challenges. According to officials, the ministry has prepared a list of FPOs that are cultivating drought-resistant crops like millets and are using climate-resilient farming practices, including mulching for moisture conservation, drip irrigation, and mixed cropping systems. The ministry has been holding webinars to promote natural farming every day in one state and is now planning to host a series of webinars in the coming days to promote climate-resilient farm practices.
