In a related development, the MHA in a communication a few days ago is learnt to have directed the DGPs and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in these states to shift from crisis management to welfare and to appoint “development-oriented officers” as a part of a public outreach programme. On Tuesday, MoS (Home) Nityanand Rai told Lok Sabha in a written reply that LWE violence has come down from a peak of 1,936 in 2010 to 234 last year, an 88% drop. “Civilian and security force deaths fell similarly, from 1,005 in 2010 to 100 in 2025. Photo: Sansad TV via ANI The Union Government said in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday (December 2, 2025) that as per the Census Act, 1948, “the respondent is required to answer all questions to the best of his knowledge or belief.” The statement came as a written reply by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai in response to a question by Trinamool Congress member Shatrughan Prasad Sinha who asked whether disclosing caste for the Census would be optional The Minister’s reply mentioned Section 8(2) of the Census Act, 1948, which says, “Every person of whom any question is asked under sub-section (1) shall be legally bound to answer such question to the best of his knowledge or belief.” The next Census will be the first digital census and the first to enumerate caste in the Independent India. There are 864 vacancies for the post of Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, with a total of 4,120 IPS officers currently occupying posts out of an authorised strength of 4,984 officers, Centre informed Lok Sabha on Tuesday. “The vacancies in the service are caused due to factors such as retirement, resignation, death, removal of service. As of January 1, 2022, the authorised strength of IPS officers is 4,984, against which 4,120 IPS officers are in position,” said Nityanand Rai, the minister of state for home affairs, in reply to DMK MP Gautham Sigamani Pon.
