Levi Colwill Sends Chelsea Into Champions League As Nottingham Forest Miss Out

Chelsea booked their place in the Champions League as Levi Colwill sealed a 1-0 win that shattered Nottingham Forest’s bid for a top five finish on Sunday. Colwill struck early in the second half at the City Ground to ensure Enzo Maresca’s side returned to Europe’s elite club competition after a two-year absence. The Blues finished fourth in the Premier League, four points above seventh-placed Forest, who were consigned to the UEFA Conference League after failing in their attempt to play in the Champions League for the first time since 1980-81. Chelsea won five of their last six league games to earn their Champions League berth despite criticism of Maresca’s conversative tactics from frustrated fans.  With their Champions League fate successfully resolved, Chelsea can focus on winning their first trophy since the Club World Cup in 2022 when they face Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday. Leading Chelsea to Champions League qualification and silverware would be a fitting riposte to Maresca’s doubters after a turbulent debut season in charge …

Nottingham Forest Chase Champions League Dream As Liverpool Party

Nottingham Forest’s historic Champions League dream is still alive as they brace for a dramatic showdown against Chelsea, while Liverpool will finally get their hands on the Premier League trophy. As the English top-flight season comes to an end on Sunday, Forest and Chelsea are among five clubs chasing the three remaining top five spots, along with Manchester City, Newcastle and Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s Villa travel to face troubled Manchester United, whose misery was compounded by their Europa League final defeat against Tottenham in midweek. AFP Sport picks out the main talking points ahead of this weekend’s action. Forest dare to dream Nottingham Forest have enjoyed a remarkable renaissance but they will still end the season with regrets if they fail to reach the Champions League. The two-time European champions last played in the continent’s top club competition in 1980/81. They have been resident in the top five for most of the season but have lost momentum in recent weeks and must now beat rivals Chelsea and hope Villa or Newcastle drop …

Nottingham Forest Striker Taiwo Awoniyi Out Of Induced Coma After Serious Abdominal Injury

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi is out of an induced coma after having urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City. The 27-year-old was injured when he collided with a goal post in the 2-2 draw against Leicester in the Premier League on Sunday and was taken to hospital on Monday after further investigations by the Forest medical team. Having had the first part of the surgery on Monday, the forward spent Tuesday in an induced coma as medical staff monitored his progress as part of the procedure. Awoniyi had the second stage of the operation, including closing the wound, on Wednesday, BBC reports. On Tuesday, Nottingham Forest said that Awoniyi is recovering well following urgent surgery. Awoniyi had only been introduced as a substitute five minutes earlier when he collided hard into a post as he attempted to score the winning goal. It later turned out that Elanga had been offside but the sideline official didn’t raise their flag until after Awoniyi had struck the post. Awoniyi …

Nottingham Forest Striker Taiwo Awoniyi Undergoes Surgery After Post Collision

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has had “urgent” surgery on a serious abdominal injury sustained in last weekend’s Premier League match with Leicester, it was announced Tuesday. The Nigeria international, 27, collided with the post in the 88th minute of the 2-2 draw at the City Ground as he attempted to get on the end of a cross from Anthony Elanga while under challenge from the Foxes’ Facundo Buonanotte. “The club can confirm Taiwo Awoniyi has undergone urgent surgery following an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s match against Leicester City,” said a Forest statement. “Everyone at Nottingham Forest sends their best wishes to Taiwo. “The club will provide further updates when appropriate.” Awoniyi, who joined Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, had only been on the pitch for five minutes having come on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangare. He tried to play on following prolonged treatment on the field, but the full extent of his injury was only discovered by medical staff on Monday. The way Awoniyi’s injury was dealt with during …

Gary Neville slams livid Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis for storming onto pitch

Gary Neville slams livid Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis for storming onto pitch

Premier League club Nottingham Forest was held to a frustrating 2-2 draw by already relegated side Leicester City on Sunday but the game was marred by controversy after a livid Forest owner, Evangelos Marinakis, stormed onto the pitch and expressed his frustrations to manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Marinakis’ frustration was mainly because Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi wasn’t substituted after picking up an injury. Manager Espirito Santo said Marinakis was upset that Awoniyi stayed on the field despite being hurt. The result left Forest in seventh in the Premier League standings, with their Champions League hopes slipping away. However, Forest secured a return to Europe for the first time in 30 years, Marinakis was fuming when he remonstrated with the manager after the full-time whistle. Story continues below this ad Football pundit, Gary Neville, blasted Marinakis for his behaviour. While commenting for Sky Sports, he said, “I feel compelled to mention that I think what the Forest owner has just done on the pitch over at the City Ground is absolutely scandalous. Que papelão… Marinakis entrando …

Manchester City Sink Nottingham Forest To Reach 3rd Successive FA Cup Final

Manchester City Sink Nottingham Forest To Reach 3rd Successive FA Cup Final

Manchester City will face Crystal Palace in their third successive FA Cup final after cruising to a 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest at Wembley on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side took an early lead through Rico Lewis and Josko Gvardiol‘s second-half goal sealed a comfortable semi-final success. City can look forward to a showdown with Palace at Wembley on May 17 after the Eagles won 3-0 against Aston Villa in the other semi-final on Saturday. Their 14th FA Cup final appearance gives City a chance to win the competition for the eighth time and the third since Guardiola arrived in 2016. City lost to Manchester United in last season’s FA Cup final after beating their cross-town rivals in the 2023 showpiece. Guardiola is hoping to salvage a turbulent season by lifting the FA Cup and qualifying for the Champions League via a top five finish in the Premier League. City, who sit fourth in the league with four games left, will go into the final as favourites after thrashing Palace 5-2 at the Etihad …

Liverpool Can Move Closer To The Title As Top Five Tension Mounts

Liverpool Can Move Closer To The Title As Top Five Tension Mounts

Liverpool will look to bounce back from a rare defeat as the runaway Premier League leaders host West Ham on Sunday. Meanwhile Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa are embroiled in a tense battle to qualify for the Champions League. Let’s take a look at three talking points ahead of this weekend’s action: Liverpool not ‘complacent’ Having sucked any drama out of the title race weeks ago, Liverpool suffered a rare defeat against Fulham last weekend that sparked accusations the leaders are getting complacent. Arne Slot’s side lost their 26-match unbeaten league run in an error-strewn 3-2 loss at Craven Cottage that bore little resemblance to the team that had marched relentlessly towards their first title since 2020. But despite their second league defeat this season, Liverpool have an 11-point lead over second-placed Arsenal with just seven games left. It would take an astonishing collapse for the Reds not to claim a record-equalling 20th English crown and Slot is convinced his players remain firmly focused on getting the job done …

Aston Villa Beat Nottingham Forest For Seventh Straight Win Ahead Of PSG Trip

Aston Villa Beat Nottingham Forest For Seventh Straight Win Ahead Of PSG Trip

Aston Villa climbed into the Premier League’s top six as early goals from Morgan Rogers and Donyell Malen secured a 2-1 win over third-placed Nottingham Forest on Saturday. A seventh consecutive victory for Unai Emery’s men in all competitions sets up Villa perfectly for Wednesday’s trip to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. Villa’s hot streak has also brought them well into the race for Champions League football next season. A top-five Premier League finish will almost certainly be enough to qualify thanks to the strong performance of English sides in European competition this season. Villa sit below fifth-placed Manchester City only on goal difference and moved to within one point of Chelsea in fourth. “We enjoy competing in the Champions League and the FA Cup, but the Premier League is the most important because it is through the league that we can reach our objective for the next season,” said Emery. Forest’s cushion over Villa is reduced to six points, leaving Nuno Espirito Santo’s side plenty of …

Man City rallies to beat Bournemouth and reach FA Cup semifinals but Haaland goes off injured | Football News

Manchester City could still end its disappointing season with a trophy after rallying to beat Bournemouth 2-1 in the FA Cup quarterfinals on Sunday, with Erling Haaland inspiring the comeback before being forced off injured. Haaland, who had a penalty saved in the first half, equalized in the 49th but hobbled off 12 minutes later with a left ankle injury, having briefly tried to play on. Omar Marmoush came on as Haaland’s replacement and, within two minutes, scored the clinching goal to ensure City won in the quarterfinals for a record-extending seventh straight season. Story continues below this ad Already out of the Champions League and down in fifth place — 22 points behind leader Liverpool — in an improbably poor Premier League title defense, City can partly rescue its season by winning the FA Cup for an eighth time, and a third time in Pep Guardiola’s tenure. City will face Nottingham Forest in the semifinals being played at Wembley Stadium next month. On the same weekend there, Aston Villa, which beat second-tier Preston 3-0 …

Manchester City Stumble, Nottingham Forest Soar In Champions League Chase

Manchester City Stumble, Nottingham Forest Soar In Champions League Chase

Manchester City failed to ease fears of missing out on the Champions League next season after twice blowing the lead to draw 2-2 against Brighton, while third-placed Nottingham Forest thrashed Ipswich 4-2 on Saturday. Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush put City in front, but high-flying Brighton extended their unbeaten run to seven games thanks to Pervis Estupinan’s free-kick and an Abdukodir Khusanov own goal. City boss Pep Guardiola said on Friday that just reaching the Champions League next season would be a “big success” after a difficult season for a side used to lifting the league title. The English champions’ early exit from Europe’s top competition to Real Madrid had at least ensured a full week’s preparation for Guardiola’s men to bounce back from last weekend’s dismal 1-0 defeat at Forest. Marmoush was restored to the starting line-up and proved to be City’s brightest spark going forward. The Egyptian won the penalty from which Haaland opened the scoring with his 29th goal of the season. City’s lead lasted only 10 minutes as Estupinan …
