A police investigation into an alleged Rs 71-crore scam, stemming from works carried out under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), has led to a political controversy in Gujarat. Amid the suspension of the release of funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MG-NREGS) for the past three years, the West Bengal government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again approached the Centre to seek the resumption of the rural job scheme in the state. West Bengal’s Rural Development Minister Pradip K Mazumdar has written a letter to the Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, seeking an appointment for a meeting, The Indian Express has learnt. NEW DELHI: Delayed payments, largescale deletion of names of workers and frequent technical glitches in several states continue to hobble the country’s flagship rural job guarantee programme, the NREGA Sangharsh Morcha, a coalition of several grassroots organisations, alleged on Thursday. NREGA workers from across the country gathered at Jantar Mantar today to demand adequate budget for MGNREGA and timely wage payments.
