(Pixabay) Indians living with obesity are more likely to seek medical advice and try weight-loss solutions than their global counterparts, according to a new survey released by Ipsos on World Obesity Day 2026. However, many of these still underestimate the serious health risks associated with obesity, the findings, drawn from Ipsos’ Global Perceptions of Obesity Study across 14 countries, reveal. The study reveals what researchers describe as an “obesity paradox” in India — while people living with obesity are more likely than the 14-country study average to seek help for their condition, they are driven by self-blame and perceived stigma, and have a critically low awareness of obesity’s serious health risks. The study compared perceptions of 3,094 people …

India ranks 2nd in childhood obesity

4 min readNew DelhiMar 4, 2026 09:25 AM IST The latest warning from the World Obesity Federation has placed India at the centre of a growing global concern. According to the World Obesity Atlas 2026, India now ranks second worldwide for children living with overweight and obesity, trailing only China. In 2025 alone, nearly 15 million children aged 5–9 and over 26 million adolescents aged 10–19 in India were reported to be overweight or obese. Projections suggest that by 2040, 20 million Indian children could be living with obesity, while 56 million may be overweight. Dr Monika Sharma, Senior Consultant – Endocrinology at Aakash Healthcare, says lifestyle changes are at the heart of this surge. “We are seeing the problem of obesity in children because they do not do a lot of activity and eat more junk food. Children sitting with a mobile phone and playing games is a common scene in most homes. Sugary drinks, processed snacks, and heavy marketing make it worse,” she explains. She adds that awareness remains limited at the household level. …

Obesity no longer a lifestyle disease: Why WHO’s new weight loss drug guidelines are a turning point | Health and Wellness News

Obesity no longer a lifestyle disease: Why WHO’s new weight loss drug guidelines are a turning point | Health and Wellness News

With weight-loss drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide taking the world by the storm — the World Health Organisation (WHO) has, for the first time, released guidelines on using these therapies for the treatment of obesity — defined as a chronic, relapsing disease. While weight-loss has been treated as a cosmetic issue for years, the entry of these effective medicines has created a shift towards recognising obesity as a medical condition, which needs to be treated and managed to reduce risk of other chronic conditions like diabetes and heart diseases. Earlier this year, the inter-government agency had included these drugs in their list of essential medicines — a list that forms the basis for many country’s health systems ensuring access to them, government procurements, and medical reimbursements. What are good practices and recommendations in the guidelines? First, the therapies may be used for the treatment of obesity in all adults, except pregnant women, for long-term — meaning six months or more. This recommendation, however, remains conditional. This is because of limited data on the health impact …

WHO issues guidelines for using novel weight loss drugs to combat obesity: ‘Chronic disease requiring lifetime care, wider access to drugs needed’ | Health and Wellness News

With the new class of GLP-1 medicines leading to effective weight loss, the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Monday released its first guidelines on their use to combat the obesity crisis. The agency recommended long-term use of these medicines for obesity but added that those prescribed these medicines should also undergo intensive behavioural therapy as part of a multi-pronged approach to treating obesity. The guidelines refer to obesity as “a chronic disease requiring lifetime care.” It goes on to say that comprehensive treatment for obesity should include screening, early diagnosis and management of obesity-related complications and co-morbidities with pharmaceuticals, surgeries and other treatment options. “Our new guidance recognises that obesity is a chronic disease that can be treated with comprehensive and lifelong care. While medication alone won’t solve this global health crisis, GLP-1 therapies can help millions overcome obesity and reduce its associated harms,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. There are currently one billion people living with obesity across the world, including 188 million school-aged children and adolescents. If nothing is done to …
