Four neighbouring States occupying over 82,000 hectares of Assam’s land: Minister

GUWAHATI Four northeastern neighbours are occupying more than 82,000 hectares of Assam’s land, the State’s Border Protection and Development Minister Atul Bora told the 126-member Assam Assembly on Wednesday (March 5, 2025). The four neighbouring States named by the Minister are Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Nagaland. Responding to a question from Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Mr. Bora claimed these four States had encroached upon 82,751.86 hectares of land across 18 districts of Assam. He added that the largest chunk of land — 59,490.21 hectares — was in Nagaland’s possession, while Meghalaya had encroached upon the least space (3,441.86 hectares). Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have encroached upon 16,144.01 hectares and 3,675.78 hectares of land, respectively, Mr. Bora said. The Minister said Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia are among the affected districts of Assam. In March 2022, Assam and Meghalaya partially resolved a 50-year-old dispute in six of the 12 sectors along their 885-km boundary. Kerala HC: No prosecution on occupying Waqf property before 2013 | India News

The Kerala High Court has held that prosecution cannot be initiated on charges of possessing a Waqf property without the sanction of the Waqf board if the property was in possession before fusing section 52A in the Waqf Act. The ruling was made by Justice P V Kunhikrishnan on November 7 in a petition moved by two officials of the Postal Department. The officials were facing prosecution under section 52A of the Waqf Act from 2017 on charges of illegally possessing a Waqf property. The court said section 52A was inserted in the Act in 2013 but the petitioners were in possession of the property even before the introduction of the section concerned. The State Waqf Board initiated action against the Postal department staff in Kozhikode pertaining to a post office functioning in a building owned by Muslim trust — JDT Islam. The board issued notices to the Postal staff and dubbed them encroachers when they failed to vacate the premises. The office has been functioning since 1999. FIR against BJP MP, 2 police inspectors for illegally occupying gurdwara in UP

An FIR has been registered against Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)`s Gonda MP Kirti Vardhan Singh and two police inspectors on the direction of the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court for forcibly taking possession of a gurdwara in September last year, police on Thursday said. Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal said that 50 to 60 others have also been included in this case registered with the Mankapur police station.
