Women’s HIL final: Rutuja Dadaso Pisal emerges unlikely hero as Odisha Warriors beat Soorma Hockey Club | Hockey News

Odisha Warriors had scored the most number of goals from penalty corners in the league phase, but in the final, they struggled to a) create those chances and b) convert them. Soorma Hockey Club had managed to score just one goal from PCs across six matches, but their equaliser on Sunday was through a drag flick. Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, a player who had not scored a single goal in the pool stage, scored twice on the biggest night of the tournament. That the Odisha Warriors were crowned the champions of the inaugural Women’s Hockey India League doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise. But how they got there at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday, wasn’t a script that many could have predicted. And the hero, quite literally, came out of nowhere to be the star performer. In a match that featured Olympic champions and senior Indian professionals, Rutuja, who hails from the remote district of Satara in Maharashtra, scored both goals that helped the Warriors prevail 2-1 …

Women’s Hockey India League: Soorma beat Odisha Warriors, move to the top of the table | Hockey News

The last time Jude Menezes and Janneke Schopmann faced off in Ranchi, exactly a year ago, it ended in a win for the Japan coach; an outcome that cost India a place at the Paris Olympics. Although Wednesday’s contest between the two tacticians wasn’t of that big a consequence, the former India international once again outwitted the Dutch Olympic gold medallist in the Women’s Hockey India League. And in doing so, Menezes’ Soorma Hockey Club ensured they’ll have a target on their back for the rest of the tournament. With India stalwart Savita Punia in goal, Soorma enhanced their reputation with a well-worked 2-1 win over Odisha Warriors, the side managed by former India coach Schopmann having a very strong squad on paper. Young attacker Hina Bano (6th minute) opened the account for Soorma Hockey Club and Sonam (47’) doubled their lead in the last quarter. Freeke Moes (57’) brought the Warriors back in contention by pulling one back with three minutes left to play. But Soorma held on for a crucial win. Odisha ended …

Women’s HIL auction: Ex-India coach Janneke Schopman’s return headlines day with intriguing subplots | Hockey News

Whether Janneke Schopman’s tenure as India’s women’s hockey head coach was a success or not is a debate that might not have a clear verdict, but what is undeniable is the bond she built with the players during her tenure. She says some of them have stayed in touch with her. That is also the reason why despite taking up a technical role with the German team, she kept the door open for any opportunity in the inaugural women’s Hockey India League. The end to Schopman’s stint wasn’t without its share of controversy, but on Tuesday the former Dutch star was back… in Orange, as the coach of Odisha Warriors. “I love India, I love the girls, I am happy that I have another opportunity to work with them,” she said. Is there unfinished business? “Not really, I did it with all my heart and it didn’t work for us (qualifying for Paris) and I always regret that.” A fresh start? “Yes, of course.” Backed by Schopman’s intimate knowledge of the Indian senior and junior …

Hockey India League auction: Attention turns to women’s event but with only four teams instead of six | Hockey News

The buzz on the day of the Hockey India League’s official launch event was around the inaugural women’s league for the sport in the country. The six-team event was to be held concurrently with the men’s tournament, which was making a comeback after seven years. However, there will now be just four teams — at least for the first season. “Two of the women’s franchises will be announced shortly after the closure of legal proceedings in the coming days,” was the official statement. That did happen, as Hyderabad Toofans (who also own a men’s team) and a Mumbai franchise to be owned by BC Jindal Group were confirmed by Hockey India. But there was a catch: these two teams won’t be part of the upcoming season but will only take part from Season 2. “After we announced that there would be six teams, Roundglass unfortunately had to miss out (both men’s and women’s). We do have two new teams confirmed, with Hyderabad Toofans and a Mumbai franchise owned by BC Jindal joining in. But on …
