Protesting ‘interference’ by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in university affairs, wardens of all hostels at Ravenshaw University, one of Odisha’s oldest educational institutions, have tendered their resignations. The University Teachers Association has requested the Vice-Chancellor to take it up with Odisha Governor Haribabu Kambhampati, who is the chancellor of university, and safeguard dignity of teachers and integrity of the university administrative processes. The issue is connected with the visit of Kataka Sadar MLA Prakash Chandra Sethi, to the East Hostel of the university where student unrest was reported. Mr. Sethi reportedly had arguments over hostel and university matters with warden and other hostel staff. It led to a serious confrontation between the MLA and the University teachers, who were aggrieved that they were insulted before students. Subsequently, as many as 29 wardens and deputy wardens tendered their resignation. The issue has already been politicised, with student groups announcing a protest to demand to preserve the university’s autonomy. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the schedule for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Odisha and Telangana after the two states sought additional time to complete different stages of the exercise, according to official communications issued on Friday. The extension is expected to provide election machinery in both states additional time to complete door-to-door verification. (PTI) In Odisha, the ECI has pushed back the deadline for filing claims and objections by 15 days to August 19 from the earlier August 4, while the disposal of claims and objections will now continue until September 17. The final electoral roll will be published on September 21. The ECI said it revised the schedule after considering a request from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Odisha, conveyed through a letter dated July 30. Officials said the situation continues to be grim in Bhadrak, Balasore and Jajpur, with the administration on its toes to manage the crisis. Authorities said nearly two lakh people are being evacuated. Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said that although water levels are receding in several north Odisha districts, most rivers are still flowing above the danger mark. The state government has said the situation is under control. But with the floods causing widespread damage, it is also preparing to pay what Pujari described as “adequate compensation” to those affected. Former Odisha Minister Susant Singh died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar early on Monday (July 27, 2026), his family said. Mr. Singh was 53 and had been suffering from a liver-related ailment for a long time, they said. A prominent leader from western Odisha, Susant Singh represented the Bhatli Assembly constituency for three consecutive terms after winning the elections in 2009, 2014 and 2019 on a BJD ticket.
