Why CBI raids on Vigilance Bureau casts a long shadow on Mann govt, IPS officer Chauhan | Chandigarh News

5 min readMay 13, 2026 08:36 AM IST In a dramatic operation that has left the Punjab government scrambling for explanation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) swooped down on the state Vigilance Bureau in an unprecedented series of raids. The anti-graft agency’s own headquarters, meant to be the sword against corruption, were suddenly the target, turning the spotlight squarely on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and exposing systemic rot in an election year. The timing could not have been more damning. Only few days earlier, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had undertaken a high-profile ‘Shukrana Yatra’, a thanksgiving pilgrimage across key religious sites, immediately after his government notified the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, a stringent law against sacrilege. The yatra was projected as a moment of moral victory and public connect, a symbolic gesture of gratitude for what the government called ‘historic legislation’ protecting faith. Yet the CBI raids have overshadowed the benefits that the yatra was meant to harvest. Instead of basking in the afterglow of a …

Gujarat High Court quashes 2006 order against retired IPS officer in 1993 mob assault case | Legal News

5 min readVadodaraMay 12, 2026 11:05 PM IST Holding that “mere suspicion of involvement” was “not sufficient” to proceed against a person who was not an accused in a case, the Gujarat High Court quashed a sessions court’s 2006 order directing that a then-serving police officer be named as an accused in a case that was mid-trial under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code. Justice HD Suthar of the Gujarat High Court held that the sessions court had “improperly exercised” the power to summon a person, as the evidence fell short. The HC was hearing a revision application filed by retired IPS officer RJ Savani, challenging the July 2006 order of the sessions court in Nadiad, Kheda, which had ordered that Savani be joined as an accused, and witnesses be recalled, in a case in which the investigating officer had earlier cleared Savani, who was serving as the Deputy Superintendent of Police at the time of the incident. In its judgment dated May 6, the HC observed that the sessions court had acted on …

The Haryana Government removed Amit Dewan, citing grave misconduct, corruption, and abuse of official authority in one of the state’s most significant recent financial scams. The action comes weeks after his arrest in connection with a Rs 590-crore scam involving the alleged diversion of government funds through IDFC First Bank and AU Small Finance Bank. In its dismissal order, the government emphasised that Dewan’s conduct amounted to “blatant corruption and gross misconduct, severely damaging the credibility of the state government and its power utilities”. Authorities also highlighted practical difficulties in conducting a fair departmental inquiry. Given his senior rank, there were concerns that subordinates might hesitate to testify freely, while there remained a significant risk that evidence would be tampered with or destroyed. Citing these exceptional …
