Meet Sunesh ‘Sunz’ Singh – keeping New Zealand’s All Whites fit and firing

3 min readUpdated: Jun 21, 2026 05:31 PM IST New Zealand aren’t the most talented side at the FIFA World Cup but what they lack in flair, they try to make up in attitude, hard work and fitness. After a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Iran, the All Whites would like to beat Egypt in Vancouver before their final group game against Belgium to keep their Round of 32 hopes alive. While the presence of midfielder Sarpreet Singh in the squad has provoked Indian curiosity, the fitness and match-readiness of the players is also in the hands of someone of Indian heritage. Sunesh ‘Sunz’ Singh has been the team’s Athletic Performance Lead and strength and conditioning coach since 2019 and is considered one of the best in the country at what he does, combining rigorous physical conditioning with mental toughness and resilience. Born in South Africa, Singh moved to New Zealand in 2001. One of his most high-profile trainees has been former UFC middleweight world champion Israel Adesanya. Pep Guardiola gives Erling Haaland injury timeframe as Man City looks to adapt without star striker | Football News

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is expected to be sidelined for “between five to seven weeks” with an ankle injury, manager Pep Guardiola said Tuesday. Guardiola gave a more precise timeframe than was offered Monday by City, which only said Haaland was seeking specialist consultation to confirm the full extent of the injury and should be fit to “play a further part in the remainder of this season.” If the Norway international was to miss five weeks, he would likely be back for the final three league matches of the season and the FA Cup final on May 17 — should City beat Nottingham Forest in the semifinals. If he misses seven weeks, Haaland would be set to return around the time of the FA Cup final and might only be able to play in City’s final Premier League match. City is heading to the United States in June for the 32-team Club World Cup. Story continues below this ad City, which has won the last four Premier League titles, is in fifth place and …

Man City rallies to beat Bournemouth and reach FA Cup semifinals but Haaland goes off injured | Football News

Manchester City could still end its disappointing season with a trophy after rallying to beat Bournemouth 2-1 in the FA Cup quarterfinals on Sunday, with Erling Haaland inspiring the comeback before being forced off injured. Haaland, who had a penalty saved in the first half, equalized in the 49th but hobbled off 12 minutes later with a left ankle injury, having briefly tried to play on. Omar Marmoush came on as Haaland’s replacement and, within two minutes, scored the clinching goal to ensure City won in the quarterfinals for a record-extending seventh straight season. Story continues below this ad Already out of the Champions League and down in fifth place — 22 points behind leader Liverpool — in an improbably poor Premier League title defense, City can partly rescue its season by winning the FA Cup for an eighth time, and a third time in Pep Guardiola’s tenure. City will face Nottingham Forest in the semifinals being played at Wembley Stadium next month. On the same weekend there, Aston Villa, which beat second-tier Preston 3-0 …

Omar Marmoush, the ‘Pharaoh’, has given Manchester City a lease of life | Football News

Just 45 seconds had passed on the digital clock at the Etihad when Omar Marmoush made his first touch in the Manchester City shirt. It was heavy, the ball ricocheted from the outside of his right foot. But how he reached the ball and how he made amends captured the virtues that convinced City to cough up 63 millions pounds to acquire his signature. The move began when Matheus Nunes clipped a neat pass to Phil Foden, stationed a few yards away from half-line. Marmoush was then lurking near the centre circle. But when Foden abruptly sliced a ball into a pocket of space in the middle, the 25-year-old pounced from nowhere and stretched his right-leg to seize the ball, even if the touch was scruffy. But he didn’t give up his wild chase. He out-sprinted his marker, gathered the ball, and swished the ball just a few inches over the bar. Had he scored, the goal would have been ruled marginally off-side, as he had timed his run a fraction over-zealously. But the sequence …

Manchester City sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt in bid to revive fortunes | Football News

Defending English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester City on Thursday announced the signing of Egypt forward Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt for 70 million euros ($73 million). The player is City’s third signing in the January transfer window after they snapped up defenders Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens and Vitor Reis from Palmeiras for a combined $77 million. Marmoush was the second-highest goal-scorer in the German Bundesliga this season with 15 strikes from 17 matches, second only to Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. Frankfurt had signed Marmoush on a free transfer in 2023 from Wolfsburg, where he only scored five goals the season before. He can play in wide roles and has generally done so for Egypt’s national team, but less successfully than in a central role. He has six goals and three assists in 35 games for his country. However, it’s not clear where he would fit in the City starting XI with manager Pep Guardiola preferring to use just a single forward which Erling Haaland has already nailed on. We’re delighted to announce the signing …
