Israel Says One-Third Of Gaza Now Under Its Military Control

Jerusalem: The Israeli military has said it is expanding the “Morag Corridor,” a new dividing line in the southern Gaza Strip, and has turned roughly a third of the enclave into “security zones” under full Israeli military control. An infographic video released by the military showed the “Morag Corridor” running through an area between Rafah and Khan Younis, cutting off Rafah from Khan Younis and central Gaza, Xinhua news agency reported. In the video, Khan Younis, southern Gaza’s largest city, appeared almost completely razed, with only a few severely damaged buildings left. “As part of the operation, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) has achieved full operational control over several key areas and routes throughout Gaza. Nearly 30 per cent of the strip’s territory is now designated as an Operational Security Perimeter,” the military said in a statement. Apart from the “Morag Corridor,” Israel has also established the “Netzarim Corridor” during the war, a military buffer zone in central Gaza aimed at isolating Gaza City and northern Gaza from the rest of the enclave. Israel has …

One-Third of Earth’s Species Could Face Extinction by 2100 Due to Climate Change

One-Third of Earth’s Species Could Face Extinction by 2100 Due to Climate Change

A significant portion of Earth’s biodiversity faces extinction by the end of the century if current greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, according to findings published in Science on December 5. The study, which reviewed over 450 research papers spanning 30 years, highlights the escalating threat climate change poses to global species, particularly amphibians and those in mountain, island, and freshwater ecosystems. The analysis draws attention to the urgent need for targeted conservation efforts and stricter climate action. Climate Change and Rising Extinction Risks The research, conducted by Mark Urban, a biologist at the University of Connecticut, analysed the impact of various warming scenarios on species survival, as per reports. The findings suggest that maintaining global temperature increases below 1.5 degrees Celsius, as outlined in the Paris Agreement, could limit extinction risks. However, a rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius could still place approximately 180,000 species — 1 in 50 worldwide — at risk of extinction. The study warns that if temperatures increase by 2.7 degree Celsius, the risk doubles, with 1 in 20 species potentially facing …

Internal Border Patrol memo: one-third of DHS’s surveillance cameras don’t work

Internal Border Patrol memo: one-third of DHS’s surveillance cameras don’t work

The House Committee on Homeland Security is looking into Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) surveillance network in the wake of a report that nearly one-third of the agency’s cameras along the US-Mexico border don’t work. Privacy advocates say this is just the latest instance of expensive border surveillance infrastructure not working as advertised. An internal Border Patrol memo obtained by NBC News said that “several technical problems” had contributed to a large-scale outage of the Remote Video Surveillance Systems, a series of surveillance towers and cameras that have been used to remotely surveil the border since 2011. According to the memo, approximately 150 of the 500 cameras are non-operational. The memo says that the Federal Aviation Administration — and not CBP — is responsible for servicing and repairing the cameras, and that the agency had internal problems meeting Border Patrol’s needs. Border Patrol is considering replacing the FAA with a contractor that can provide “adequate technical support” for the cameras, the memo states. Rep. Mark E. Green (R-TN), the chair of the House Homeland Security …
