Raman, popularly known as the ‘guardian of native paddy,’ has been selected for the first Oommen Chandy memorial award for outstanding contributions to Kerala’s farm sector. Agriculture Minister T. Siddique announced his name while announcing the 2025 Kerala State Farm Awards in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday (August 9, 2026). The award carries ₹5 lakh in cash prize, citation and plaque. In a message, the septuagenarian Mr. Raman, who hails from the tribal community in Wayanad district, told The Hindu that he was happy to have been picked for the award named after the late Congress leader and the former Chief Minister. Mr. Raman, who was conferred the Padma Shri in 2023 for his “contribution to sustainable agriculture and preservation of biodiversity,” underscored the need to encourage farming and farmers. Anitha M. Kasim of Fathimapuram, Changanassery, was selected as the best ‘Urban rooftop farmer,’ another new award included on the list of 38 award categories. Congress leaders and workers on Saturday remembered former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as a leader of the people and as the prime mover behind major initiatives such as the Vizhinjam international seaport. Paying his tributes to Chandy in a Facebook post, Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan said the former Chief Minister taught that it was the duty of every public activist to hold close the common people. Mr. Satheesan added that he was trying to model himself on Chandy as he now occupies the Chief Minister’s chair. Congress MLA Sunny Joseph on Friday (May 2) said the Vizhinjam port project stands as a testament to the unwavering vision and commitment of the late Oommen Chandy, calling him the true “development hero” behind its realisation. Speaking at a public meeting held at Gandhi Square near the Collectorate after a Congress-led demonstration, Mr. Joseph asserted that, regardless of what others now claim, the people of Kerala recognise Vizhinjam as the result of Oommen Chandy’s steadfast efforts. “The truth is, Oommen Chandy was a handful of nautical miles ahead of the national development vision — a fact engraved in the public conscience of the country,” he said. Ginu Zacharia Oommen to head Kerala State Food Commission

Ginu Zacharia Oommen will be the new chairman of the State Food Commission. The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting held on Thursday. A former member of the Kerala Public Service Commission, he is currently a visiting professor at the International Institute for Migration and Development (IIMAD), Thiruvananthapuram, and a honorary fellow at the Middle East Institute, New Delhi. He is also an executive member of the C. Achutha Menon Foundation. Section 16 of the National Food Security Act, 2013, requires the State governments to establish a State Food Commission to monitor and review the implementation of the Act.
