A group of residents staged a road roko at the ATC Junction in Udhagamandalam in front of an LPG cylinder distribution agency on Monday, alleging that the agency was not delivering cylinders to their homes, nor were they accepting bookings. The protesters blocked the road with empty LPG cylinders following which traffic was hit for over 30 minutes. The police held talks with them to discontinue their protests. Forest officials suspect leopard killed woman near Ooty

Representative image | Photo Credit: SATHYAMOORTHY M The Forest Department continues its search for the elusive carnivore that killed and partially consumed a 50-year-old woman at Arakadu village near Udhagamandalam. The incident is believed to have occurred on Wednesday evening, with the body of 50-year-old G. Anjalai, from Perar, being discovered on Thursday by local residents. Following the incident, the Forest Department immediately shifted their efforts towards identifying the animal responsible for the incident, with camera traps being set in the vicinity of where the body was discovered. Divisional Forest Officer (Nilgiris division) S. Gowtham told The Hindu that the camera traps set up in the area did not manage to capture any images of the carnivore that could have been responsible for the attack. “However, we have found pug marks and have also collected hair samples from the area, with the latter being sent for forensics analysis to confirm the species of the animal,” said Mr. Gowtham. UDHAGAMANDALAM As tourist inflow into the Nilgiris picked up for the extended weekend due to Christmas holiday on Dec. 25, the roads of Udhagamandalam and Coonoor towns choked with tourist traffic. One resident from Udhagamandalam, visiting from Mysuru in Karnataka, said the Theppakadu to Udhagamandalam Road, through Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, witnessed long lines of tourist traffic on Dec. 22 evening. “What would usually take us 90 minutes to traverse, ended up taking almost double that time, as we had to navigate crowds of tourist buses and cars all making their way up the hill,” said the resident, R. Smitha. On Dec. 24, Udhagamandalam town witnessed heavy traffic, especially along the Ettines Road, due to tourists making their way to the Government Rose Garden, apart from the Garden Road, the Ooty Bus Stand and along the Ooty to Gudalur Road.
