Mayawati opposes ‘creamy layer’ for SCs, STs in reservation, hits out at RSS

Lucknow, BSP supremo Mayawati on Sunday opposed the ‘creamy layer’ concept in reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, arguing that affirmative action was linked to their social transformation, economic emancipation and self-respect and criticised the RSS for allegedly politicising the issue. Mayawati opposes ‘creamy layer’ for SCs, STs in reservation, hits out at RSS In a post on X, Mayawati said reservation was an “extremely important and sensitive” issue for SC, ST and OBC communities, particularly for SCs and STs who have faced discrimination, exploitation and deprivation for centuries. She said discussing a ‘creamy layer’ for these communities was not only inappropriate but also contrary to the “humanitarian objectives” of the Constitution drafted under the leadership of Dr BR Ambedkar. “Reservation is essentially about giving millions of people who have been victims of the caste system for centuries, and who have been exploited, oppressed, neglected and ostracised, their constitutional and legal right to equality on humanitarian grounds,” she said. The Union government on Thursday opposed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking an income-based sub-quota within reserved categories, contending that the constitutional architecture of reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) is founded on historical and social disadvantage and cannot be restructured solely on the basis of economic criteria. The Centre has urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the petitions. The batch of matters is likely to come up for hearing on August 18. (PTI) The Centre also opposed extending the “creamy layer” principle to SCs and STs, arguing that Supreme Court precedent has consistently confined the doctrine to Other Backward Classes (OBCs). (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) The proposal, which was first cleared by the PMPML board of directors on Thursday, subsequently came before the standing committee for fund approval. Jagtap questioned the rationale behind procuring buses fitted with doors on both sides — a design suited exclusively for bus rapid transit system (BRTS) routes — at a time when the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is actively dismantling existing BRTS corridors with no stated plans for expansion. “If PMC is demolishing the BRTS and has no future plans for extending it, why are PMC and PMPML pushing for the purchase of dual-door buses that are only suitable for BRTS routes?” he asked. Jagtap said the dual-door configuration not …

Jaya Bachchan strongly opposes Transgender Amendment bill in Parliament

She strongly opposed the Bill, which has been tabled by the ruling party, and called for appropriate representation of the transgender community in Parliament. Jaya Bachchan on Transgender Amendment Bill  The Bill, recently introduced by Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar, has drawn criticism for allegedly narrowing the definition of transgender identity and proposing additional procedural requirements for legal recognition. Activists and legal experts argue that the proposed legislation marks a departure from the landmark National Legal Services Authority v. Union of India (NALSA) verdict, in which the Supreme Court upheld the right to self-identify one’s gender without mandatory medical intervention. During her speech, Jaya Bachchan highlighted the cultural and mythological significance of transgender persons in India. She said, “This community, which we are discussing, has been immensely blessed by Ramji. He had said that on every special occasion, the presence of transgender persons would make the event auspicious.” Emphasising traditional …
