Rohit Pawar launches 'Jail Bharo' agitation over farm loan waiver scheme
Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP SP) leader Rohit Pawar on Monday launched a fresh agitation in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, accusing the Maharashtra government of failing to honour its commitment to discuss farmers’ concerns over the newly announced farm loan waiver scheme, reported the PTI. Addressing reporters before the protest began, the Karjat-Jamkhed MLA claimed the government had deployed a heavy police presence to discourage demonstrators and warned that a ‘jail bharo’ movement would be launched if the protest was suppressed. Pawar recalled that he had suspended his indefinite hunger strike in Pandharpur earlier this month after Maharashtra minister Girish Mahajan assured him that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would convene a meeting with farmers before the state legislature’s monsoon session. However, Pawar alleged that despite the legislature session being underway, no such meeting had taken place. He said the farmers had withdrawn their earlier agitation in good faith but accused the government of betraying that trust by failing to fulfil its assurance, according to the PTI.
