The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a colonel posted with the Army Ordnance Corps, Eastern Command, in connection with a ₹50 lakh bribery case, agency officials said. The Central Bureau of Investigation filed the FIR in the case on May 18 (AFP FILE) The officer was taken into custody in Kolkata under the Prevention of Corruption Act and is being brought to Delhi for further interrogation, officials said. According to CBI’s first information report (FIR) filed on May 18, Colonel Himanshu Bali, who was posted at the Army Ordnance Corps in Kolkata’s Fort William, was accused of indulging in corrupt practices to favour a Kanpur-based private person and his firm in the award of tenders, approval of substandard samples and clearing of pending and inflated bills in lieu of bribes. The Pimpri Chinchwad police, in a joint operation with the military intelligence unit of Indian Army’s Southern Command, have arrested a Pune resident for allegedly swindling lakhs of rupees from people promising them jobs in an ordnance factory in Pune, the police said on Thursday. The police said that the accused identified as Subhash Magan Pawar, resident of Khed taluka, was working with a defence establishment in Pune. The suspect had allegedly taken about Rs 43 lakh from at least four people. The police suspect the accused has allegedly cheated more persons through the recruitment scam. Mumbai: A massive blast ripped through an ordnance factory near Nagpur this morning, killing eight workers and injuring seven others. The blast occurred in the Bhandara district of Maharashtra. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the deaths at an event in the afternoon. “In Bhandara, at the ordnance factory, a major mishap has taken place, resulting in the death of eight people and injuries to seven others. This is preliminary information,” the minister said while asking people to observe a minute’s silence to pay respect to those who lost their lives in the “unfortunate incident”. Around a dozen people were injured and one person is reported missing after a massive blast occurred at ordnance factory in Jabalpur district of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, an official said, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, the blast took place at around 9.45 am when explosive material was being filled in bombs in a refilling section of the factory, the official from the establishment said. Among the injured persons, two were in a serious condition and admitted to a hospital. Another worker was missing and was possibly trapped under the debris of the section in which the blast took place, he said. The blast was so powerful that it was even heard by people a few kilometres away, as per eyewitnesses. The Ordnance Factory Khamaria is one of the major ammunition production unit under the Department of Defence Production. The condition of three employees is said to be critical. At least 10 people have been injured in an explosion at an ordnance factory in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district. Officials said the blast occurred on Tuesday morning at the Central Security Institute Ordnance Factory in Khamaria, where bombs and explosives are manufactured. They said three of the injured people, who are employees of the factory, have been rushed to a private hospital for urgent treatment and their condition is said to be critical.  A hydraulic system reportedly malfunctioned during the bomb-filling process in building 200 of the factory’s F-6 section, causing the blast, which was so powerful that it could be heard as far as five kilometres away.
