The two donations, carried out on June 29 and June 30, have taken Mumbai’s tally of deceased organ donations in 2026 to 35, according to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC). The first donation took place on June 29 at Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road, where a 28-year-old fitter technician employed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) was declared brain dead. The deceased, a resident of Boisar, had met with an accident on June 25 while riding to work. He fell off his motorcycle in Tarapur and suffered a critical head injury. Following certification of brain death, his family consented to donate his organs. The committee had rejected a Bangladeshi family’s application for a kidney transplant after concluding that the marital relationship between the child’s parents had not been established. Mathew Achadan, the recipient of the organ that was flown for the first time in Kerala by an air ambulance died on Monday, over a decade after his heart transplant surgery. According to his family, 57-year-old Achadan had a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Chalakudy in Thrissur district. Mathew Achadan (HT) “Achadan’s death is extremely saddening. We had overcome a lot of challenges to perform his transplant surgery (in 2015). At the time, the chances of him surviving at least a year were only 50%. But post-surgery, he went on to live for 10 more years. More than half of them – 19 – were from government hospitals, the majority situated outside Chennai. “This is the highest-ever number of donations in one month. This year, till today (February 12), 42 donations have taken place in 43 days – at a rate of one donation a day in Tamil Nadu. The 42nd donation is under way at the Government Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital,” N. Gopalakrishnan, member secretary, Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN), said. Significantly, the maximum contributor to these 33 donations was a peripheral medical college hospital – Government Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital – which functions as a Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre (NTORC). The donations were reported by S L Raheja Hospital in Mahim, Fortis Hiranandani Hospital in Navi Mumbai and Hira Mongi Navneet Hospital in Mulund. The donors provided multiple organs and tissues including kidneys, livers, corneas and skin. So far this year, Mumbai has seen 10 deceased organ donations, which have resulted in 20 organs being transplanted, according to the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre. However, 4,871 patients are still on the waiting list. Another donation process is currently underway in Dombivli, with details awaited.
