Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has found a new admirer in former Australia batsman Greg Chappell. Chappell, who also coached India in the noughties, is a well-respected batting expert, and his praising Sooryavanshi is no ordinary thing. It lends a lot of weight to what former Indian players like Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar have already said about the teenage star. Greg Chappell is an expert in batting matters. (Getty Images) Describing Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary talent, Chappell, in his column for ESPNcricinfo, wrote: “When studying Sooryavanshi in full flight, one is immediately struck by a technical purity that elevates his work above the crude, muscle-bound power-hitting of the modern era. His clean, uninhibited bat swing possesses an organic symmetry that evokes cricket’s finest aestheticians. “In his elegant downswing and flawless balance, there are distinct echoes of the great Graeme Pollock and the incomparable Sir Garfield Sobers. Shivraj says fertilisers not easily available in international market, pushes for organic farming

Bhubaneswar, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday acknowledged challenges in procuring fertilisers from the international market, urging states and farmers to increasingly adopt organic farming as an alternative. Shivraj says fertilisers not easily available in international market, pushes for organic farming Addressing the Eastern Zonal Agriculture Conference in Bhubaneswar, Chouhan said the Centre was making every possible effort to ensure fertiliser availability for farmers despite global supply constraints. “I have no hesitation in admitting that fertilisers are not easily available in the international market. The Government of India is trying hard to procure fertilisers from wherever they are available for our farmers,” he said. He stressed the need to prevent the diversion and misuse of subsidised fertilisers during the ongoing supply crunch. “We must ensure that subsidised fertilisers are not diverted to any other sector. At the same time, duplication and poor-quality fertilisers, which adversely affect crops and farmers, must also be checked. States should take stringent action wherever such irregularities are found,” Chouhan said. Referring to the Union Cabinet’s recent decision to …

Climate change, imbalance in fertiliser use kill soil’s organic carbon: ICAR study

The team of scientists developed an ‘agri-ecological base’ map to assess the impact of cropping systems and the use of fertilisers on organic carbon. They covered 20 agro-ecological regions. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu A detailed study conducted by eight scientists of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), including its Director General Mangi Lal Jat, has found that the unscientific use of fertilisers and climate change are contributing to degradation of organic carbon in arable areas of the country. The study, primarily coordinated by the ICAR’s Indian Institute of Soil Science in Bhopal, has used 254,236 soil samples of 620 districts covering 29 States to reach the conclusions. A research paper based on the six-year-long study started in 2017 has been published now in the England-based international research journal ‘Land Degradation & Development.’ Talking to The Hindu about the research, coordinator of the project Arvind K. Bhool Chuk Maaf’s Theatrical Gamble Pays Off: An organic win for content and cinema amid OTT disruption

Bhool Chuk Maaf’s Theatrical Gamble Pays Off: An organic win for content and cinema amid OTT disruption

In an unexpected turn of events, Bhool Chuk Maaf became one of the most talked-about Hindi film releases of the month—not just for its content but for the dramatic developments surrounding its release strategy. Initially scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide, the film’s producer made a last-minute decision to pull it from theatrical release just a day before its premiere, opting instead for a direct-to-digital debut on Amazon Prime Video. The move sparked immediate backlash from the country’s largest multiplex chain, PVR INOX, which responded by taking legal action and securing a restraining order to prevent the film’s OTT release. The controversy sent ripples across the industry, reigniting the long-standing debate around theatrical windows and the growing push from certain production houses for shorter or simultaneous OTT releases. Insiders revealed that PVR INOX had insisted on a four-week exclusive theatrical window, while Maddock Films—producers of Bhool Chuk Maaf—preferred a significantly shorter commitment, reportedly requesting only a single-show arrangement in the week of 6th June, when two major films are scheduled to release. Ultimately, a two-week theatrical …

Bennu Asteroid Sample Reveals Organic Compounds That May Hint at Life Beyond Earth

Bennu Asteroid Sample Reveals Organic Compounds That May Hint at Life Beyond Earth

A sample from asteroid Bennu, delivered to Earth by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission in 2023, has revealed a collection of molecules and minerals that play a fundamental role in biological processes. Organic compounds such as amino acids, nucleobases, and ammonia, along with minerals formed in saltwater, have been identified. The findings suggest that the necessary conditions for life may have been present in various regions of the early solar system, raising the possibility that life could have developed beyond Earth. Key Findings from the Study According to the study published in Nature and Nature Astronomy, 14 of the 20 amino acids essential for protein formation and all five nucleobases found in DNA and RNA were detected in the Bennu samples. The presence of ammonia and formaldehyde was also noted, both of which are significant in the formation of complex organic molecules. These compounds, previously identified in meteorites, were found in an uncontaminated sample collected directly from space, reinforcing the idea that asteroid material could have contributed to the emergence of life’s building blocks. As reported by …
