Did Nolan cast black actors in The Odyssey to meet Oscars eligibility criteria? Academy Awards’ diversity rule explained

If you believe the internet, then you would know that Christopher Nolan – the man they called the Spielberg of his generation – is butchering Homer’s Odyssey. In reality, the auteur is adapting the ancient Greek epic for the big screen. The Odyssey, set to release later this year, has been fully filmed with IMAX cameras and is touted as one of the most anticipated films of the year. But weeks before its release, the buzz is around its casting. Kenyan-Mexican actor Lupita Nyong’o has been cast as Helen of Troy, while rapper Travis Scott appears as a poet. These two castings have been criticised online as ‘diversity hires’, with many questioning the ‘race-swapping’ casting of Helen and the presence of a black rapper in ancient Greece. Acting performances using AI for ‘enhancements’ eligible for Golden Globes; but AI actors ineligible, say organisers

After the Oscars ruled out AI actors from award contentions, the other major Hollywood awards – Golden Globes – have also said that performances by AI-generated actors will not be eligible. Organisers of the Golden Globe Awards clarified that new guidelines will not automatically disqualify performances that use artificial intelligence to enhance an actor, but will require that a live human be the main element. New rules at Oscars gives India a chance

New rules at Oscars gives India a chance

MUMBAI/LOS ANGELES: On May 1, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced a series of revisions to its existing rules. Ahead of the 99th Oscars in 2027, the regulations mandate that actors can be nominated for more than one performance in the same category, and the website states the consideration will depend on portrayals that are “demonstrably performed by humans with their consent” and not artificially engineered. A more significant shift has been in the International Feature Film category with the expansion of the eligibility criteria. The new directive makes space for multiple submissions from the same country. New rules at Oscars gives India a chance Traditionally, this category restricted countries to one submission per year, with specific rules. In order to be considered, a non-English language film must have a theatrical release for seven consecutive days in the country of its origin and be chosen by an organisation, jury or committee approved by the Academy. Exclusive! Oscars 2027 Gajraj Rao: Technology should be to tell a story better not to make writers, actors unemployed

The introduction of AI guidelines for the Oscars marks a pivotal moment for the film industry, signaling both cautious acceptance and firm boundary-setting. These evolving rules are not just about eligibility, they reflect a broader cultural negotiation over the role of technology in storytelling. Actor-writer Gajraj Rao tells us, “Bilkul sahi decision hai. Kahaniyaan algorithm se nahi, insaan ki zindagi se nikalti hain. AI madad kar sakta hai, par mehsoos nahi kar sakta. This move by the Academy Awards reassures writers that their voices are still paramount. There must be a distinction between a tool and a storyteller. Machine or insaan ki ladai, Industrial revolution ke zamane se shuru ho gai thi. AI bade bhari paimane par, aaj ki duniya main dakhal de raha hai, mujhe nahi lagta ab isse kinara kiya ja sakta hai, bas balance banaya ja sakta hai. Technology should be used to tell a story better, not to render writers and actors unemployed. The Oscar Academy is a large institution; the policies it creates will have a global impact. Hopefully, our …

Exclusive! Oscars 2027: Screenwriters Juhi Chaturvedi, Niren Bhatt react to AI guidelines

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced several major rule changes for the 99th Academy Awards (taking place in 2027), focusing on AI restrictions, acting nominations, and international film eligibility. Among the important rules are screenplays must be written by humans, not chatbots, to qualify and acting performances must be demonstrably performed by humans with their consent to be eligible. Noted Indian actors, lyricists, writers and filmmakers spoke to us about their thoughts on the same. Noted screen and dialogue writer and the name behind films like Madras Cafe (2013) and Piku (2015), Juhi Chaturvedi says, “Writing is the sum total of a life lived, experiences I have had, it’s a deep quest that a writer has to want to know things, that pushes you to explore the unknown. That’s what it takes to write an original screenplay written by human beings. Words breathe oxygen into an abstract entity. You pour what you have cried and laugh about into your writing, that’s the human quality in a piece of cinematic writing. AI is …
