In a social media post on Sunday, the finance minister said, “The communication sent not only to Tamil Nadu but to the chief secretaries of all States is merely an advice that the incentive policies provided by state governments should be integrated with National priorities.” Sitharaman added that such a directive to Tamil Nadu not to provide incentives for paddy procurement is “a complete falsehood, politically motivated, and a deliberate distortion created with the aim of …

Jalandhar Farmers Experiment With Cassava as Paddy Alternative

Jalandhar Farmers Experiment With Cassava as Paddy Alternative

Jalandhar witnessed an unusual agricultural moment on Monday as farmers gathered in Malsian village to harvest a crop rarely seen in Punjab’s fields. Instead of the familiar paddy or wheat, thick cassava tubers were pulled out from neatly raised ridges on a three-acre experimental plot, drawing curiosity and cautious optimism. The successful harvest of this tropical crop marked what many described as a decisive step towards crop diversification in the state. The initiative was spearheaded by former Punjab minister and Congress MLA Rana Gurjit Singh along with his son Rana Inder Pratap Singh, MLA from Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district. The experimental cultivation was carried out in the fields of Congress MLA Hedev Singh Laddi Sherowalia in Malsian village. What is Cassava? Cassava, a gluten-free and climate-resilient tuber, is widely grown in southern states such as Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Originally native to South America, it later spread across Africa, which today accounts for nearly 50% of global cassava production, and eventually became a major crop in South India. A large number of farmers gathered …

Patnaik accuses Mohan Majhi govt of betraying farmers over paddy procurement| India News

Former chief minister and Biju Janata Dal president Naveen Patnaik on Monday alleged that there has been a “complete systemic failure” in the state’s ongoing Kharif paddy procurement operations at state-run mandis. Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi at the inauguration of the paddy procurement system in Kendujhar on December 26 (@CMO_Odisha X) In a letter to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Patnaik alleged that the current procurement season has been marked by “profound struggle” for the farmer community, and attributed the crisis to administrative negligence and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government’s failure to honour its 2024 poll promises. “At the heart of farmer grievances lies the continued prevalence of ‘katni chhatni’ — arbitrary and illegal deductions from agricultural produce at procurement centres. During the 2024 elections, you made solemn commitments to the farming community regarding enhanced MSP and stopping of Katni-Chhatni. However, the ground reality across Mandis tells a story of betrayal,” Patnaik said in his letter. He alleged that deductions of 5-7 kg per quintal, or even higher, are being made under …
