Driving the Padel revolution in India

Come the 3rd of May, all the padel aficionados in the country will head to Gurgaon, for what awaits them is the grand finale of the Decathlon Padel League 2025 – India’s Biggest Padel league. Currently in Season 1, the Decathlon Padel League was conceptualized to grow the sport from the grass root level and build its ecosystem across the country. Fun meets fitness While conventional racquet sports have traditionally maintained a stronghold, padel has been quietly rising to the surface and making inroads on the popularity front. As of early 2025, over a hundred padel courts have popped up across the nation with Mumbai alone owning 50 courts. The trajectory is only upwards as they are being set up on a regular basis across the metros and in select tier 2 cities as well. In the span of a couple of years, Padel has gone from a little-known sport to a countrywide phenomenon. Currently, there are over 150 Padel courts across the country, and millions have taken to the sport either recreationally or professionally. With the number growing at an exponential rate, Padel, like across the world, is currently among the fastest-growing sports in India. Amidst the Padel boom is the Indian Padel Federation (IPF), a not-for-profit organization aimed at developing Padel at the grassroots level. For Japanese padel player Kotomi Ozawa, the phrase “delivering under pressure” holds a deeper significance. The 26-year-old, who is partnering finance expert Elisabeth Nogueras Lorenz, faced relatively little pressure during the women’s semifinals of the FIP Promotion India Padel Open held at Bennett University in Noida on Saturday. They easily defeated Indians Sharmada Balu and Prerana Prathap 6-1, 6-2. They will face Spaniards Ainize Santamaria Landa and Aitana Solan Domenech for the women’s title on Sunday. Before Ozawa dedicated herself to padel full time five years ago, she worked as an obstetric aide at Keio University Hospital in Tokyo. “It’s not only about facilitating birth. We care for both babies and mothers during and after pregnancy. I can’t even count how many people I have assisted,” she says with a beaming smile. Like many padel players, Ozawa has a background in tennis. Padel, which is a mix of squash and tennis, is played on a much smaller court and does not involve the amount of physical rigour required in tennis, making it popular at club …
