A fresh batch of 5,201 pilgrims departed from Jammu for the twin base camps of the annual Amarnath Yatra in Kashmir on Thursday under tight security arrangements, as the pilgrimage continued to witness a steady flow of devotees from across the country. Officials said that more than 3.25 lakh devotees have so far offered prayers at the 3,880-metre-high Amarnath cave shrine, one of Hinduism’s holiest pilgrimage sites dedicated to Lord Shiva. Latest batch includes sadhus, women and children The latest batch included 92 sadhus, nine sadhvis, 3,970 men, 1,124 women, five children and one transgender pilgrim. The devotees travelled in a convoy of 251 vehicles escorted by personnel from the CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police., with elaborate security measures in place along the route. According to officials, the convoy left in two phases. The first group, carrying 1,745 pilgrims to the Baital base camp in 74 vehicle, departed at 3 am. Heavy to very heavy rain lashed parts of India on Saturday, with Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh among the worst-hit as landslides blocked roads and disrupted public life. According to the India Meteorological Department, very heavy rainfall was recorded over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya, while heavy rainfall was recorded over West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. In Uttarakhand, heavy rainfall triggered landslides, blocking 120 roads, including three national highways, while around 100 pilgrims were escorted to safety across a washed-out stretch of the Yamunotri National Highway after the route remained cut off for two days. According to the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), a massive accumulation of debris completely blocked the highway at Syanachatti in Uttarkashi district on Thursday after incessant rain triggered a landslide that washed away nearly 100 metres of the road. A sudden spell of intense rainfall, possibly caused by a localised cloudburst, struck the forest areas of Awoora and Dehwathu in Pahalgam, in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, they said. The cloudburst triggered flash floods in a stream in Awoora. The overflowing waters inundated at least half a dozen hotels, prompting the rescue and relocation of tourists to safer places, they said, adding, several houses in the area were also affected. There was no report of any loss of life or injuries. The administration is closely monitoring the situation, officials added. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday named Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed as an accused in its supplementary charge sheet on the Pahalgam terror attack. In the charge sheet filed before the NIA special court in Jammu, the anti-terror agency charged Pakistan-based Saeed in his individual capacity and also as chief of the banned LeT and its active proxy organisation The Resistance Front (TRF), an NIA statement said.
