Palaniswami on Thursday urged the State government to take stringent legal action action against the accused. Criticising the DMK government over the occurrence of such offences, Mr. Palaniswami claimed that sexual crimes were on the rise in various levels under the DMK government. In a social media post, Mr. Palaniswami also expressed shock over an incident in Tirupattur district, wherein a DMK functionary was allegedly involved in a sexual harassment of a 13-year-old girl; harassment of a student by a cook in Thoothukudi district; and harassment of a student by a teacher in Dharmapuri district. It was a “matter of shame” that teachers and police officers, who were supposed to protect students and women respectively, have in deed turned offenders, he said. Palaniswami on Friday criticised the DMK government over the increase in taxes and prices of various commodities. He also took aim at the ruling party over its assurance to secure an exemption from NEET for Tamil Nadu, as well as other electoral promises. Mr. Palaniswami also devoted a significant part of his speech in the Assembly to level allegations against the government with regard to the Anna University sexual assault case, and defended his erstwhile government’s handling of the Pollachi sex scandal. Palaniswami on Sunday criticised the functioning of the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department under the DMK government. According to news reports, under the ‘Tholkudi’ scheme (aimed at upgrading amenities in tribal habitations), funds have been misused, he said in a statement. He further said that in the 41 months of the DMK rule under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, welfare schemes were not reaching the beneficiaries. Palaniswami on Friday, May 10, 2024 took exception to what he called the non-release of the draft elephant corridor plan, in the Tamil media. Referring to the release of the draft plan in English on April 29, Mr Palaniswami, in a statement, said that even though the last date for submission of comments was May 5, the Forest Department had not released the plan in Tamil, through newspapers or the electronic media, as of May 9.  The draft plan, comprising 161 pages, he pointed out, could be fully comprehended by the tribal community and other sections of society only if it was in Tamil. The DMK government completes three years in power this month.   In a statement, Mr. Palaniswami alleged  that some members of the ruling party themselves were involved in the “smuggling of drugs.” He said the law and order in the State had “deteriorated” with the incidence of murders, robberies and sexual violence on the rise.
