The Rajasthan High Court, on Friday, stayed proceedings before a consumer forum against actor Salman Khan. This was regarding a case concerning misleading advertisements of pan masala featuring the Bollywood superstar. Rajasthan HC stays proceedings Justice Anuroop Singhi passed the order on a petition filed by Khan, in which he challenged the orders of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission at Jaipur. The district commission had restrained the advertisements and also issued bailable warrants against Khan, which had later been upheld by the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. Meanwhile, Khan separately filed an appeal against the same before the National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (NCDRC) while moving the High Court challenging the consumer proceedings. Senior Advocate GS Bapna, who appeared for Khan, argued that the actor had only endorsed the company’s “silver-coated elaichi” product and had never advertised pan masala. He even submitted that the complaint was ex facie misconceived. An additional excise duty on cigarettes and tobacco products, and a health cess on pan masala, over and above the highest 40 per cent GST rate, will come into effect from February 1. The cess and excise levies will replace the existing 28 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST), plus compensation cess, on such `sin goods` which was there on these items since GST was rolled out on July 1, 2017. Also, from February 1, a new MRP-based valuation mechanism will be introduced for tobacco products (chewing tobacco, filter khaini, jarda scented tobacco, gutkha) whereby GST shall be determined based on retail sale price declared on the package. Pan masala manufacturers need to apply for a new registration under the health and national security cess law from February 1. Manufacturers of such products will have to install a functional CCTV system covering all packing machines and preserve the footage for at least 24 months. Mumbai: Dumping of construction debris, encroachments and unauthorised commercial activities have been continuing on Wadala’s salt pan lands for years due to inaction by various government departments, the salt commissioner has told the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The affidavit was filed in pursuance with a petition filed by the nonprofit Vanshakti in 2024, which alleged that debris dumping began on the plots began around 2019 and intensified during the pandemic. According to the report, which was made public on Wednesday, the nightclub ‘Birch by Romeo Lane’ in Arpora village of North Goa stood in the middle of a salt pan or water body, land on which construction is expressly prohibited. The inquiry noted that erecting any structure on a salt pan is impermissible under existing laws as well as earlier regulations, and violates provisions of the Goa Land Revenue Code and Coastal Zone Regulations. The court has also asked the actor to appear in person on January 20, along with the relevant documents and the notary concerned. Salman Khan asked to appear before court The court passed the order after the complainant, BJP leader and advocate Indramohan Singh Honey, raised concerns about the authenticity of Salman Khan`s signature on the power of attorney as well as the reply submitted before the court. The complainant asked for a forensic verification of the signatures, claiming discrepancies. The consumer court accepted the objection and directed that the signature be inspected by a state-authorised as well as recognised agency or a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
