2 min readPanchkulaUpdated: Jun 20, 2026 03:01 PM IST Panchkula police said the horse-mounted patrols will now be deployed to the unit in hilly terrain, villages and narrow lanes, with an aim to strengthen policing in difficult-to-access areas, ACP Vikram Nehra said on Friday. Police are launching horse-mounted patrols as a pilot project for areas where conventional vehicles often struggle to reach. The ACP also said the pilot project initiative was also to patrol remote and deserted stretches, crowded areas and rugged terrain within the district’s jurisdiction. This comes a day after police launched the horse patrols under the supervision of Sector 21 police post in-charge Didar Singh. During the patrol exercise, mounted personnel also interact with residents to gather feedback on security concerns. Nehra said Panchkula police currently has a dedicated horse-mounted unit stationed at the Sector 21 police post. The district police have constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the June 3 firing incident, in which Panchkula club owner Rattan Lubana (30), a close relative of a municipal councillor from ward number 1, was targeted by shooters allegedly linked to fugitive gangsters Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar. Lubana had reportedly received threats in the past. Shooter sent to 7-day police custody; another, who was injured in encounter, under treatment. Chandigarh, The Haryana Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report pertaining to a large number of CCTV cameras installed by the Municipal Corporation, Panchkula being “non-functional” and called for a report from the concerned officials in the matter. According to the news report, out of a total of 473 CCTV cameras installed by the Municipal Corporation, Panchkula, nearly 200 cameras are currently non-functional, constituting a substantial portion of the surveillance infrastructure. Despite repeated concerns raised by the traffic police for timely repair and maintenance, the issue persists, indicating administrative delay. As a result, there has been a significant decline in traffic challans issued through electronic surveillance, the report said. The Panchkula police in Haryana have said they busted a racket involved in online betting on Women’s Premier League (WPL) cricket matches, arresting seven people from a rented house in Sector 21 on Monday night. The police said on Wednesday that they also recovered Rs 7 lakh in cash, along with four laptops, 46 mobile phones, two computer monitors, three tablets, and a sound recorder from the house. The arrests and seizures followed a tip-off the police received late on Monday night. Bets were being placed on an ongoing cricket match between Uttar Pradesh and Bengaluru when a team of detective staff led by in-charge Mandeep Singh raided the spot, according to the police. Ahead of the proposed visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Panchkula on Wednesday, the district police has put in place elaborate security arrangements. In this regard, a high-level security review meeting was held on Monday evening under the chairmanship of Panchkula Police Commissioner (ADGP) Shivas Kaviraj at the GO Mess in the Police Lines. An official said that as part of the security deployment, a sea of police force has been mobilised. A total of 10 officers of SP/DCP rank, four Additional SPs, 41 DSPs/ACPs, 90 inspectors and around 2,750 police personnel will be deployed to handle security duties during the visit. The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of Rs 49.54 lakh to a cyclist who had lost his leg after being hit by a truck in Panchkula. The tribunal ruled in favour of Heera Singh, 37, a professional chef, holding the truck driver, owner and insurer liable for the accident that left him permanently disabled. According to the case, Heera Singh, who was working as a chef at a private hotel in Panchkula, met with the accident on April 14, 2023. The petition mentioned that the incident occurred around 1.30 pm when he was returning home on his bicycle after finishing work. As he reached the traffic light point between Sectors 4 and 12 in Panchkula, a truck rammed into his bicycle. The impact threw Heera Singh on the road, and the truck reportedly dragged him for some distance, causing severe injuries.
