Chandigarh: VC’s ‘no-concert’ decision goes for a toss as star night continues at PU

Even as Panjab University (PU) vice-chancellor Renu Vig on Tuesday said that the star night scheduled on Wednesday had been cancelled following the shooting incident on the campus, the event continued unhindered, with singer Satinder Sartaaj performing for over 5,000 students at the university’s cricket ground. The three-day fest was halted on Tuesday evening when four armed youths allegedly opened fire at a student leader, Jashanpreet Singh Jawanda, near the department of botany. In the immediate aftermath, VC Vig said that the event was cancelled and that no student organised event would be permitted until a new security management framework was put in place. However, she remained unavailable for comment on Wednesday as the event took place. DSW Yogesh Rawal and chief of university security Vikram Singh also remained unavailable for comment. A senior …

The Union government has put on hold its decision to restructure Panjab University’s (PU) governing bodies — the senate and syndicate — until further notification, officials familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The government had previously issued a notification on October 28. (HT Archives) The development follows meetings held on Tuesday and Wednesday between representatives of PU students and senior officials of the Union ministry of education, during which students voiced their concerns over the proposed changes. “The central government hereby rescinds the notification of the government of India in the ministry of education, Department of Higher Education, dated October 28, 2025,” a gazette notification issued by the Union education ministry dated November 4, mentioned. The ministry, however, issued a second notification on November 4, stating that the provisions of October 28 notification would come into effect on a date to be decided later by the Centre — unlike the earlier October 28 notification, which had said the changes would take effect immediately. “The ministry has decided that the recent notification regarding the governance structure …

Restructuring of Panjab University’s senate-syndicate has exposed ‘BJP’s anti-Punjab face’, says ex-Cong min

Panjab University. | Photo Credit: The Hindu Former Health Minister and senior Congress leader Balbir Singh Sidhu on Monday (November 3, 2025) said that the BJP-led Central government’s move to restructure the ‘Syndicate and Senate’ of Panjab University has yet again exposed the BJP’s “anti-Punjab face.” Mr. Sidhu stated that under the pretext of improving the functioning of Panjab University, the Central government has almost eliminated the representation of teachers, principals, and alumni in its syndicate and senate, converting them into nominated bodies now directly under its control. “This historic institution of Punjab is now ‘Panjab University’ in name only, as in practice, it has been turned into a fully central university,” he said in a statement. He alleged that the BJP government intends to end or drastically reduce Punjab’s representation in every institution, just like in the BBMB (Bhakra Beas Management Board), so that Punjab can no longer influence their decisions. Hitting out at the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, Mr. Sidhu said, “the Central government dared to take this step …
