Months after he finished up fourth in the men’s 10m air rifle final in Paris Olympics, Arjun Babuta would receive the author Charlie Mackesy’s picture book The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse from his coach Deepali Deshpande. The picture-book, which was later made into an 2023 Oscar winning animated short film, revolved around the idea of love, hope, friendship and the courage of asking for help with the storyline involving a boy getting lost in winter wilderness and crossing paths with a mole, a fox and a horse and eventually choosing to stay with his new friends. Harmanpreet Singh, Praveen Kumar nominated for Khel Ratna Award

Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and para high-jumper Praveen Kumar have been nominated for the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. However, Paris Olympics medallists Manu Bhaker’s name has been missing from the nomination, which was recommended by a 12-member selection committee, headed by Justice Ramasubramanian, a retired Supreme Court judge. Manu Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first Indian woman to win two medals at the Olympics, winning bronze medals in the women’s individual 10m air pistol shooting and the mixed team event along with Sarabjot Singh. Officials in the sports ministry have alleged that Manu did not apply for the award, although the selection committee is not bound by a formal application and can take suo moto cognizance in recognition of her achievements this year. Meanwhile, Harmanpreet Singh’s nomination is a reward for his excellent performances at the Paris Olympics, finishing as India’s top scorer and leading the country to back-to-back bronze medals at the Olympics in hockey. Maheshwari Chauhan stays in hunt for quota

Maheshwari Chauhan kept Indian hopes high at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Final Olympic Qualification Championship Shotgun in Doha, perching at sixth position in the 71-strong women’s Skeet field, after two rounds of qualification. She shot a perfect 25 in the second, for a tally of 48 on the day, which tied her with nine others and put her one behind a group of four leaders which included Rio Olympic champion Diana Bacosi of Italy. Two more rounds come up on Saturday, before the finals on Sunday, which follow the fifth and final qualifying round. The top six go through to the final. Maheshwari’s teammates Areeba Khan and Ganemat Sekhon shot scores of 45 and 44 to be in the 29th and 43rdspots respectively. The men had a tougher day as all three of Mairaj Ahmad Khan, Sheeraz Sheikh, and Angad Vir Singh Bajwa shot identical scores of 46 over two rounds.
