The Mohali municipal corporation (MC) in the House meeting held on Friday also approved a proposal to streamline the management of parks maintained by residents welfare associations (RWAs). The move is expected to encourage more RWAs to voluntarily undertake park maintenance. Mohali presently has 695 parks, of which 198 are already being maintained by RWAs. Under the revised mechanism, a single nodal authority will process applications from RWAs seeking to maintain parks, monitor compliance with MC guidelines and exercise powers to cancel agreements in case of violations. Officials said the move is expected to encourage more RWAs to voluntarily undertake park maintenance. The current maintenance assistance remains ₹4.23 per square metre. Several councillors supported the demand and also sought deployment of caretakers and security staff at public toilets to ensure better upkeep. The first House meeting of the newly elected Mohali municipal corporation (MC) is set to be held on Friday, with councillors expected to deliberate on two major civic proposals handing over maintenance of neighbourhood parks to resident welfare associations (RWAs) and approving revised estimates for the construction and maintenance of public toilet blocks across the city. The revised estimates proposed for approval are ₹116 lakh each for Zones 1 and 2, ₹127.48 lakh for Zone 3 and ₹168 lakh for Zone 4, taking the total estimated expenditure to over ₹527 lakh. (HT File) The meeting, chaired by mayor Sarabjeet Singh Samana, will begin at 10 am at the Municipal Bhawan in Sector 68. The proposal regarding the parks seek approval for allowing registered welfare associations to undertake maintenance of parks located in their respective localities. A total of over 326 acres of land has been earmarked for these parks and cabinet approval has been granted for transfer of all land parcels, said the state government on Monday. The government’s objective is to attract investment as well as create employment on a large scale in the state, added the government. Several of the 61 complaints which were received by the Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) during its grievance redressal programme, Prajavani, pertained to such encroachments and illegal sale of sites meant as open spaces. A complaint mentioned encroachment of 1,800 square yard plot in Sailakshmi Layout on the survey numbers 181 and 183 in the purview of Nizampet Municipal Corporation. The same complaint mentioned disappearance of parks and roads to the extent of five acres in survey numbers 153 and 154, and encroachment of 23 acre VNR Park site. Plot owners from Diamond Hills Colony in Hydernagar of Kukatpally complained about erasure of nine acre layout with 70 residential plots.
