Govt to push five new bills, prioritise pending FCRA amendment

The Centre is set to pursue an ambitious legislative agenda during the Eight Session of the 18th Lok Sabha, with plans to introduce five new bills while prioritising the passage of two pending legislations, including the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to run from July 20 to August 13. Focus on pending bills Among the government’s top priorities is the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, which was introduced earlier this year. The Centre is also expected to take up the Viksit Bharat Shiksha Adhishthan Bill, 2025, introduced in the Lok Sabha in December last year and later referred to a joint Committee for detailed examination. The Opposition MPs, who were suspended during the last session for protesting against the lack of a response from the government after an unprecedented security breach, will return to Parliament after the Privileges Committee of the two Houses recommended the revocation of their suspension.  Floor leaders of various parties on January 29 attended an all-party meeting convened by the government ahead of the Budget session of Parliament. The session will begin with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of the Lower and Upper Houses. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Interim Budget on February 1, ahead of the Lok Sabha election likely to be held in April-May.  Follow the live updates here: Source link

Parliament Winter Session Live Updates

Parliament has reconvened today for the 2022 Winter Session, which will see 17 sittings over 23 days. The session begins a day before the counting of votes of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, along with those of six assembly and one Lok Sabha bypolls. As per the notified schedules, the government plans to introduce 16 new Bills during the session. These include a draft law to increase accountability and reform the electoral process in multi-state cooperative societies. The Cantonment Bill deals with the administration of cantonments to impart democratisation and increase efficiency. The session is all set to be stormy as the Opposition prepares to corner the Centre on issues such as the border situation with China, price rise, unemployment and the alleged misuse of government agencies. At a meeting called by the Centre to discuss the legislative agenda, the Opposition listed over a dozen issues for raising during the session.
