HC sets aside rejection of US firm’s patent plea over lack of reasons, orders fresh decision

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has quashed orders denying a patent to US-based Huntington Alloys Corporation, holding that the authorities’ conclusion that the invention was linked to atomic energy was unjustified and could not be sustained in law. Bombay High Court (HT Photo) The company had moved the court against a November 2020 decision of the deputy controller of patents and a subsequent April 2021 order of the Department of Atomic Energy, both of which refused its application for the investigation of an “Ultra Supercritical Boiler Header Alloy and Method of Preparation”. At the core of the dispute was whether the invention fell within the restricted domain of atomic energy under the Patents Act. The firm maintained that its technology—an alloy developed for high-temperature boiler systems—had no nexus with atomic energy and was wrongly classified. The proposed alloy, comprising nickel, cobalt and chromium, is designed for use in boiler header pipes operating under extreme temperatures. The company argued that its composition enhances durability, strength and weldability, making it suitable for long-term industrial use. During the hearing, …

Floodgates for cheap weight-loss drugs open as key patent expires

The market for diabetes and weight-loss drugs is set for a transformation starting Friday as Danish drugmaker Novo Nordisk’s patent on semaglutide expires, triggering the launch of a multitude of cheaper generic versions. Experts warned of potential misuse of weight loss drugs and the importance of medical supervision in their use for obesity and diabetes management. (Shutterstock) More than 50 branded versions of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Novo’s diabetes drug Ozempic and weight-loss treatment Wegovy are expected to enter the Indian market, making it one of the most crowded drug launches in recent years. The influx is likely to sharply reduce prices and improve access for diabetes and obesity patients, but experts warn it could also lead to misuse. Sun Pharma, Mankind Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s , Zydus, Lupin and Alkem are among the companies expected to launch generic versions. ALSO READ | Can Ozempic usage hurt kidneys? Indian Pharma’s ‘Sema’ Storm: Over 50 Semaglutide Brands Queue Up As Ozempic Patent Expires | Health and Fitness News

Last Updated:March 06, 2026, 07:30 IST From Semaglip, Sematop, Semakind to Semastrike, Semaglyn and Semaril, the pipeline of upcoming Ozempic copycats reads like variations of the semaglutide molecule itself Boxes of Ozempic and Wegovy made by Novo Nordisk are seen at a pharmacy. File pic/Reuters If there is one prefix that is likely to dominate prescriptions in India over the coming months, it may well be “Sema”. With key patents around semaglutide—the blockbuster molecule behind drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy—set to expire in India next week, Indian pharmaceutical companies are ready to introduce their own versions. Industry insiders say more than 50 brands are preparing for launch, and a curious pattern is emerging: most of them begin with the same four letters. From Semaglip, Sematop, Semakind, Semester, Semaglide, and Semalup to Semastrike, Semaglyn, Semaril, Semapride, Semalup, and Semalix, the pipeline of upcoming copycat versions of Ozempic reads almost like variations on the original molecule—semaglutide. In fact, industry estimates suggest around 80–85 per cent of brands preparing for launch start with “Sema”, reflecting how companies anchor …

Dale Steyn wants Yashasvi Jaiswal to temporarily stop using patent shot: ‘Maybe it’s something he needs to consciously cut down on’ | Cricket News

South Africa pace great Dale Steyn said that Yashasvi Jaiswal should temporarily stop using his patented cut shot just like Sachin Tendulkar had shelved his drive in Australia. The left hander fell on Tuesday once again against South Africa trying to put away Marco Jansen with the shot. “It’s his go-to shot, and breaking that instinct is tough. When you see the ball in your zone, you go for it. But maybe it’s something he needs to consciously cut down on. I remember Sachin once removed the drive from his game in Australia. Jaiswal may also need to say, ‘Unless it’s in a specific area, I won’t play it. In this area, I’ll trust my defence’,” Steyn said on JioHotstar after the day’s play. “It was a bit of a false shot by Jaiswal. It’s his default option — he likes playing that shot. He is probably so used to right-arm bowlers angling the ball across him that playing that shot feels natural. But with Marco Jansen being a left-armer, it looks like the ball …

Baidu Looks to Patent AI System to Decipher Animal Sounds

Baidu Looks to Patent AI System to Decipher Animal Sounds

Ever wished you could understand what your cat is trying to tell you? A Chinese tech company is exploring whether it’s possible to translate those mysterious meows into human language using artificial intelligence. Baidu, owner of China’s largest search engine, has filed a patent with China National Intellectual Property Administration proposing a system to convert animal vocalisations into human language, according to a patent document published this week. Scientists have long attempted to decode animal communication, and Baidu’s patent represents the latest effort to leverage AI to do so. The document says the system will collect animal data, including vocal sounds, behavioural patterns, and physiological signals, which will be preprocessed and merged before an AI-powered analysis designed to recognise the animal’s emotional state. The emotional states would then be mapped to semantic meanings and translated into human language. The system could allow “deeper emotional communication and understanding between animals and humans, improving the accuracy and efficiency of cross-species communication,” Baidu said in the patent document. “There has been a lot of interest in the filing …
