Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala, waterlogging roads and flooding low-lying areas, with the IMD on Friday issuing an orange alert in seven districts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Kasaragod districts of the state. The weather agency also said that thunderstorms with moderate to heavy rainfall and strong winds reaching 40 kilometers per hour were likely in various parts of these districts. The State Election Commission (SEC) has annulled the election of the vice-president of the Kottangal grama panchayat in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, citing procedural violations. The decision followed a complaint filed by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), which alleged that the election held on December 27 was conducted in violation of statutory norms. The 14-member panchayat comprises five United Democratic Front (UDF) members, five Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, three SDPI members, and one Left Democratic Front (LDF) member. During the election to the post of president held on the morning of December 27, the SDPI extended support to the UDF candidate, who was elected. However, the UDF president resigned soon after, declining the SDPI support. The election to the post of vice-president saw candidates from the UDF, BJP and SDPI in the fray. An adult tiger that had frequently strayed into human settlements and attacked domestic animals was trapped by the Forest department in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala on Monday (December 22, 2025), officials said. According to forest officials, the presence of the tiger was reported at Kumbalathamon, near Vadasserikara, over the past two months following repeated attacks on domestic animals. Forest department personnel later installed camera traps and confirmed the presence of the straying tiger. Officials said the tiger had killed buffaloes, dogs and goats belonging to farms and residences at Kumbalathamon, which is located close to the forest area. On Sunday, a goat was killed by the tiger, and its carcass was found at an isolated spot near the forest, an official said. Subsequently, forest officials laid a cage trap with the carcass used as bait near the location where the goat was found dead. As the nomination withdrawal window drew to a close on Monday, a rebel wave has hit Kottayam and Pathanamthitta, leaving major fronts firefighting internal mutiny instead of facing their real rivals. In Pathanamthitta, rebel candidates have surfaced across key municipalities and panchayats, including Pathanamthitta, Adoor and Thiruvalla, as well as several local bodies such as Ezhamkulam, Pazhavangadi, Ranni, Naranamoozhi, Vechoochira and Konni. The list of rebels includes branch and area committee members of the CPI(M), along with block- and ward-level office bearers of the Congress. Among the prominent rebel candidates are M. Pathanamthitta district hospital to get critical care and OP blocks

In a significant boost to the public healthcare network in Pathanamthitta, authorities are set to commence work on new critical care and outpatient (OP) blocks at the district hospital here. According to Health Minister Veena George, ₹23.75 crore has been sanctioned for the new critical care block, while the OP block will be constructed at a cost of ₹22.16 crore. Additionally, ₹3 crore have been sanctioned from the MLA fund for purchasing equipment for critical care. Addressing a meeting to review the progress of work at the district hospital here on Monday, the Minister also directed the hospital superintendent to prepare a list of equipment required for the hospital. The new critical care block is being built on an area of 51,000 square feet. The four-storey building will have car parking in the basement, and the ground floor will include an emergency department with modern trauma care facilities, an isolation ward, a minor operation theatre, a plaster room, a doctor’s room, a nurse’s room, and a pharmacy.
