Jadumani Singh’s 5kg gamble pays off, enters Round of 16

3 min readJul 25, 2026 12:26 AM IST Jadumani Singh had a successful 2025 – a year that was built on his southpaw excellence in the 50kg category. But the men’s boxing weight classes at major amateur events all start at the 55kg category. So the Manipuri boxer made the tough call – a five-kilogram jump in weight and the uncharted territory that comes with it would have to follow. The Commonwealth Games and its lack of seeding would have to be the first major tournament in the weight class. The 23-year-old boxer turned in a spectacular opening round, one that set the tone for the judges over where this bout was headed, and defeated home favourite Aaron Cullen 5-0 in a unanimous win to start his Commonwealth Games campaign on Friday evening. The lack of seeding meant that what could have been a bout for the later rounds was played out as an opener. In these situations, Indians have struggled, especially after the Tokyo Olympic cycle. But Jadumani fashioned a victory, one which came …

Girija Oak: Box office pays my bills, but it doesn’t affect my job

Despite Bharat Bhagya Vidhata’s underwhelming box office performance, actor Girija Oak says an actor’s work cannot be measured by a film’s collections. While acknowledging that box office is crucial for the industry as “everybody has to take home a sum of money”, she insists a film’s commercial performance should never dictate an actor’s approach to their craft. “I don’t think it’s got directly to do with an experience of being in a film as an actor, but we also have to understand that this is a business, and we are very much part of a huge machinery that works, where everybody has to take home a sum of money for their lives to go on. So we can’t shy away from the fact that moviemaking is an industry and it’s a business,” says Girija, adding: “Yes, box office does matter to a film because finally it has to sustain the people that are involved in it.” Girija Oak: Box office pays my bills, but it doesn’t affect my job However, Girija is quick to draw …

England’s short ball ploy pays off against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

England’s short ball ploy pays off against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

3 min readJul 4, 2026 08:12 PM IST England had a plan. They may have been in all sorts of turmoil in recent times, but they had done their homework on the youngest-ever cricketer to represent India. “We have some tactical decisions. Just a matter of executing now,” captain Harry Brook said at the toss about their ploy to keep Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in check on his international debut. Sooryavanshi’s debut seemed an inevitability at Manchester, considering the form — or the abject lack of it — of Sanju Samson in the last three matches. Anticipating the move, England had devised a plan against Sooryavanshi. Not that plans always work against the youngster, but today, they did as he only scored a 10-ball 14. England peppered the prodigy with short balls. Every delivery came with a disclaimer: age is of little relevance in the big boys’ club. Sooryavanshi swung and missed the first two deliveries he faced off Josh Tongue. His maiden international run was almost anti-climactic to the build-up: an inside-edged single while trying to …

Portugal edged past Croatia in Toronto on Friday in a match that swung both ways. After falling behind 1-0, goals from Ronaldo and Gonçalo Ramos powered the team to the next round, where they will face Spain in another heavyweight clash. An emotional Ronaldo pointed to the sky while wearing Jota’s jersey after the final whistle, as emotions ran high.
