Grid strains to meet peak daytime power demand; government says conserve | Business News

Grid strains to meet peak daytime power demand; government says conserve | Business News

The country’s power grid struggled to fully meet peak daytime electricity demand for the first time during this summer, prompting the government on Friday to urge citizens to use electricity “wisely and judiciously”. The appeal comes amid reports of power cuts from several parts of the country as India recorded a peak daytime shortage of 188 megawatts (MW) for the first time this summer when electricity demand touched a record 270 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday, according to data from the Grid Controller of India (Grid India). The shortfall was roughly equivalent to the peak electricity demand of a state like Manipur.  But any slight mismatch in demand and supply can cause extreme strain on the system, leading to fluctuation in grid frequency and can risk grid stability. Power cuts usually occur when demand exceeds supply of electricity and grid operators resort to load shedding. Peak demand figures, whether daily or monthly, are largely statistical reference points, as they reflect the highest load recorded at any moment during a given period on a particular day, often …

Referring to the peak power demand met on Tuesday (May 19, 2026), the Power Ministry held, “This capacity to deliver on rising power demand is not a story of overnight transformation but one of sustained focus on generation, transmission and distribution over the past few years.” As on May this year, India has an installed capacity of more than 538 gigawatts. Of this, the installed renewable sources-based capacity is 283.46 GW inclusive of 150.26 GW solar, 56.09 GW wind, 11.75 bioenergy, …

Why India curtailed solar energy during peak summer power demand | Explained News

Why India curtailed solar energy during peak summer power demand | Explained News

Even as India’s electricity demand touched a record high in April amid an early summer heatwave, on average 23 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power were curtailed every day — enough to serve one-fourth of Delhi for a day. An analysis of data from the Grid Controller of India (Grid India) shows that solar curtailment in April was 74% higher than the combined curtailment recorded in January, February and March, signalling growing stress in the power system even as daytime demand surged. Curtailment — when grid operators ask renewable energy plants to reduce generation to maintain system stability — translates into a substantial loss of clean electricity at a time when India is accelerating its clean energy transition. According to data from Grid India, at least 693.81 GWh of solar power was curtailed, compared to a total of 399.34 GWh curtailed between January and March. Earlier, a report by global energy think tank Ember also found that a total of 2,300 GWh of solar power was curtailed under a mechanism called Emergency Tertiary Reserves Ancillary Services …

TVK is the single-largest party, upstaging established stalwarts like the DMK and AIADMK, and even beating sitting ministers in ‘safe’ constituencies. This has led to speculation that even though TVK has not crossed the majority mark of 118, Vijay will soon take oath as the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu. And fans have noticed that the superstar predicted this over two years ago. Actor Vijay is the frontrunner to become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. When Vijay manifested being the ‘TN CM’ While Vijay formed the TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) only in 2024, he had expressed aspirations to enter politics long before.
