Why US has listed Alibaba, BYD and Baidu as Chinese military companies

Why US has listed Alibaba, BYD and Baidu as Chinese military companies

Earlier this week, the US Department of War added major Chinese companies — including e-commerce giant Alibaba, internet search engine Baidu and EV company BYD — to an official list of “Chinese military companies” operating directly or indirectly in the US. China’s foreign ministry said the list “unreasonably suppressed” Chinese companies and urged the US to “correct its mistaken practices.” Chinese companies, too, criticised the move. BYD told Reuters that the decision harmed “its development achievements in the United States”. Similarly, Alibaba said it was not a Chinese military company “nor part of any military-civil fusion strategy”, and that it would consider appropriate legal action. What is the basis of such inclusions, how does it affect their operations, and what does it say about the state of the larger US-China geopolitical competition? Basis of links to Chinese military The list is in accordance with Section 1260H of the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021. The Act authorises appropriations for military activities of the US Department of Defense. Here, Section …

In China, the party takes on the army

China’s senior-most general, second in the pecking order only to President Xi Jinping, has become the subject of an investigation as the country’s most powerful leader continues his purge of military officials suspected of graft or disloyalty. A statement from China’s defence ministry only said that General Zhang Youxia, a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) that controls the armed forces — and a childhood friend of Xi — was being investigated for “grave violations” of discipline and the law. Leaks to the media suggest Zhang is accused of sharing technical information on China’s nuclear weapons programme with the US, building his circle of influence within the CMC, and accepting bribes for official acts such as promotions. Xi’s current purge amounts to one of the biggest changes in the Chinese military’s leadership since the events of Tiananmen Square in 1989. This points to Xi’s assertion of his will over the military to consolidate his own power, and his willingness to sacrifice even a confidant he himself elevated to a high position. It is …

(Photo: AP) The Chinese military said on Monday it was dispatching air, navy and rocket troops to conduct joint military drills around Taiwan, a move it called a “stern warning” against separatist and “external interference” forces. The drills came after Beijing expressed anger at a statement by Japan’s prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, that its military could get involved if China were to take action against Taiwan, the self-governing island that the world’s second-biggest economy says must come under its rule. But the Chinese military did not mention Japan in its statement on Monday morning. Taiwan, an island off the southeastern coast of China, separated from the mainland in 1949 amid Civil War. It has operated …

China’s military, state media slam US after Reuters report on SpaceX spy satellites | World News

Chinese military and state-run media on Sunday accused the United States of threatening global security, days after a Reuters report which found Elon Musk’s SpaceX was building hundreds of spy satellites for a US intelligence agency. SpaceX’s Starshield unit is developing the satellite network under a classified $1.8 billion contract with the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), Reuters reported on Friday, citing five sources familiar with the programme. A social media account run by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said the SpaceX program exposed the United States’ “shamelessness and double standards” as Washington accuses Chinese tech companies of threatening U.S. security. “We urge U.S. companies to not help a villain do evil,” Junzhengping, an account run by the PLA, posted on social media platform Weibo on Sunday. The account has 1.1 million followers. “All countries worldwide should be vigilant and protect against new and even bigger security threats created by the U.S. government,” the post said. Wang Yanan, chief editor of Aerospace Knowledge, a magazine overseen by the ruling Communist Party, was quoted in an interview …
