SC grants more time for pharmacy council to verify colleges

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended till September 15 the deadline for the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) to grant approvals to pharmacy colleges for admissions in the 2026-27 academic session, subject to an undertaking that no further extension will be sought in the coming years. India News The order came on an application filed by the PCI seeking a change in the admission schedule fixed by the court in 2012 and modified in 2025. Under the existing schedule, approvals for colleges and courses were required to be completed by June, with the admission process commencing from August 1. The PCI told the court that delays in inspections, caused by both colleges and a shortage of manpower within the regulator, had slowed the approval process. It sought permission to extend the approval deadline to September 15 and allow classes to begin by October 15. Higher Education Minister Roji M. John declared the results in Kochi on Saturday (June 27, 2026). Dhyan Tej Manappatti of Cheruvanchery, Kannur, is the second rank holder, and Vismaya K. R of Eravathur, Thrissur, is the third rank holder in the engineering stream. Jessae Jestin of Ollur, Thrissur got the second rank and Diya Fathima of Kavanoor, Malappuram secured the third rank in pharmacy respectively. Health Ministry proposes 12-month minimum shelf life for imported drugs

The Union Health Ministry has published a draft notification proposing amendments to the drugs rules under which imported drugs should have a minimum residual shelf life of 12 months at the time of import. The step would ensure that patients receive medicines with adequate usable shelf life and improve utilisation of pharmaceutical inventories across the supply chain. The draft amendment published for public consultation vide gazette notification on June 22 proposes to revise the existing requirement of a minimum residual shelf life of more than 60 per cent for imported drugs to a minimum residual shelf life of 12 months at the time of import. However, in view of their specialised nature and public health considerations, the existing requirement of a minimum residual shelf life of more than 60 per cent shall continue to apply to biological products and radiopharmaceuticals. The proposed amendment seeks to facilitate greater efficiency in the pharmaceutical supply chain while maintaining the availability of quality medicines for patients, the ministry said. All major pharmacy chains, hospital-based medical stores, Jan Aushadhi Kendras and AMRIT pharmacy outlets across India will remain open on May 20, despite a nationwide shutdown call by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD) over concerns related to e-pharmacies, according to sources on Tuesday, reported the PTI. Several state-level pharmacy associations have already decided not to participate in the proposed strike. These include associations from West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Ladakh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Sikkim and Uttarakhand, according to the PTI. In a major crackdown, the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) busted a large-scale fake pharmacy registration racket and arrested 47 people, including a former employee of the Delhi Pharmacy Council (DPC) on Wednesday. The arrests were made following an extensive investigation into fraudulent pharmacist registrations facilitated through forged documents, according to an official statement. The racket, as per the ACB’s findings, was masterminded by Kuldeep Singh, a former registrar at DPC, who allegedly conspired with a private firm hired to conduct online pharmacist registrations.
