Openers, all-rounders, pace: India’s World Cup puzzle has no fixed pieces | Cricket News

With the 2027 ODI World Cup some fourteen months away, India face an uncomfortable question: how ready are they for a tournament they haven’t won since 2011? Going by the evidence, not very. This remains a team yet to settle its best XI, and the uncertainty has begun to show in the performances themselves. None of this is a talent problem. This remains one of the deepest squads in world cricket. The risk is self-inflicted: a side this talented undone by its own indecision rather than by an opponent. That imbalance isn’t only about personnel. Few players in this set-up are certain of their spot or their role, and that uncertainty runs from the top of the order to the bottom. The danger is that a muddle like this rarely stays confined to the XI. It breeds an insecurity …

‘Playing so many times online and offline has made winning with black pieces normal’

‘Playing so many times online and offline has made winning with black pieces normal’

3 min readApr 2, 2026 04:39 PM IST After four rounds, Kazakhstan GM Bibisara Assaubayeva leads the women’s Candidates with 2.5 points, jointly with Anna Muzychuk. But it is her win in Round 3 playing black, and a risky line at that, that has left an early impression on the tournament where she features for the first time. The win against Zhu Jiner, a tournament favourite, came from an unusual Rook to g8 ploy, where Sarah didn’t quite develop all the pieces, but hung on to secure the bold win, backing herself despite being tracked by doubts. “It feels good because I like this position line, but in some moments I don’t like my position. I regretted it a little bit because I saw some other games where they had normal positional games. But in general it’s a good decision to play this kind of risky position,” she told Lichess after Round 3. It was a throwback to 2023 against Aryan Tai at Norway Chess, and when Lichess reminded her of the precedent, Bibisara said, …

Candidates Tournament: R Praggnanandhaa gives Wei Yi a run for his money with black pieces, before settling for a draw | Chess News

Modern chess is strange, in ways that go beyond the surface. It’s an age when engines are so powerful that every opening has been analysed to death, and top players can rattle off 20 moves of theory without breaking a sweat. The result is a defensive standard that’s never been higher. When both players know what the computer thinks is the best move and mistakes are ruthlessly punished, the draw has become the default outcome at the elite level. So how does one win? Monday’s game between India’s R Praggnanandhaa and China’s Wei Yi, in the second round of the 2026 Candidates Tournament, offered a hint of an answer. It was another draw, but in reality, it was more than two grandmasters playing for a truce. Praggnanandhaa had come prepared with something special, and he used it to push Wei Yi, one of the most reliable defenders in the world, to the very edge. The shared point was almost like an afterthought, and what really mattered was how close the Indian came to breaking through …

Jon Obi Mikel rips into Arsenal’s playing style from set pieces, brands it ‘illegal’ | Football News

3 min readUpdated: Mar 13, 2026 07:30 PM IST Former Chelsea player Jon Obi Mikel was the latest to criticize league leaders Arsenal for their playing style, branding it illegal. The Gunners are currently sitting atop the Premier League table with a 7-point gap with second-placed Manchester City. “When I watch Arsenal play right now, they depend solely, solely on corner kicks. You have spent almost a billion, Mikel Arteta and you’re telling me the only way you can win games is through corner kicks? It’s ridiculous. The only reason why the Arsenal fans are not complaining is because they’re top of the league. The creativity that they have, the potentials that they have, it’s all gone out of the window. We don’t see them anymore,” Mikel said on talkSPORT. “What they do during set-pieces, for me, it’s illegal. First of all, they’re impeding the goalkeeper and now they start holding players. When you hold a play, when you impede a player from jumping, I watched the game against Chelsea when they played against us. …
