Two-time unopposed corporator Ravi Landge elected Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor

Two-time unopposed corporator Ravi Landge elected Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor

Pimpri-Chinchwad witnessed a historic moment on Friday as senior corporator Ravi Landge was elected unopposed as the 27th mayor of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), ending nearly four years of administrative rule in the civic body. At 41, Landge has created a unique record in PCMC’s history. A two-time unopposed corporator during the 2017–2022 term, he has now carried forward the same distinction to the mayoral post. He has become the first leader in the corporation’s history to be elected unopposed three times consecutively — twice as a corporator and now as mayor. The election is significant as it comes after the civic body remained under administrative control since March 12, 2022, following the expiry of the elected council’s term and delays in municipal elections. During this period, the corporation was administered successively by Commissioners Rajesh Patil, Shekhar Singh and Shravan Hardikar. Deputy mayor and key appointments Alongside Landge’s election, Sharmila Babar was unanimously elected as deputy mayor. Other key appointments include Prashant Shitole as Leader of the House and Bhausaheb Bhor as Leader of …

Punekars shun NCP factions as BJP sweeps Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls

Punekars shun NCP factions as BJP sweeps Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad civic polls

The two Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) factions came together in an attempt to reclaim their former strongholds of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, which the undivided party had controlled for several terms before losing power in 2017. However, those hopes were dashed on Friday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won both municipal corporations with clear majorities, bettering its performance compared to the last election. Loss in Pimpri-Chinchwad Despite making emotional appeals asking citizens to vote for NCP candidates, and promising to personally monitor development by visiting the city every eight days, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar failed to gain control of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for the second consecutive civic election in what was once considered his political stronghold. The NCP managed to gain only one additional seat compared to the previous election, settling at 37 seats. The latest PCMC election became a direct contest between the BJP and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction. Ironically, this battle unfolded while Pawar remained part of the BJP-led state government. Internal erosion within the NCP further weakened his …

Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad residents see mega ‘noisy Sunday’ as campaigning peaks

Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad residents see mega ‘noisy Sunday’ as campaigning peaks

The political atmosphere across Maharashtra’s Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad turned intense and noisy on Sunday as parties pulled out all stops on the final weekend ahead of the civic polls scheduled for Thursday, January 15. With only two days left before the official end of campaigning on Tuesday, January 13, candidates and party leaders intensified their outreach through rallies, roadshows, bike rallies, and door-to-door meetings. The final Sunday before polling emerged as a full-scale “mega campaign day”, with society meetings, corner meetings, and ward-level processions unfolding simultaneously across residential and commercial pockets of the twin cities. Campaign vehicles fitted with loudspeakers, traditional dhol-tasha troupes, and high-decibel music systems were widely used to draw attention. Senior leaders were also active on the ground. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led a roadshow in Bhosari, while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar released the Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP’s) civic poll manifesto for Pimpri-Chinchwad. The manifesto release gained political significance as Pawar shared the stage with his cousin and Member of Parliament (MP) Supriya Sule — a rare public appearance since the …

Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad voters unmoved by `hypothetical` promises

Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad voters unmoved by `hypothetical` promises

As the campaign for the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad civic elections enters its final phase, political parties have intensified their outreach with a fresh round of promises. However, many voters say they are no longer persuaded by what they describe as repetitive, unrealistic, and election-centric assurances that have failed to translate into action over the years. From long-pending infrastructure issues to a surge in “free service” announcements, voters across the cities are questioning the credibility, intent, and financial feasibility of the pledges being made in the last leg of campaigning. ‘Red Zone’ issue: A repeated promise without resolution One of the most contentious and long-standing concerns resurfacing during the campaign is the ‘Red Zone’ restriction around the Dehu Road ammunition depot and the Dighi magazine depot. The 2000-yard prohibited zone has affected nearly three lakh property owners in several parts of Pimpri-Chinchwad for decades, restricting sale, redevelopment, and utilisation of permissible floor space index (FSI). Despite repeated assurances across elections, residents say the issue remains unresolved. Sayali Chandorkar, a resident of Sector 21 in Nigdi, expressed …
