Bhopal: Over 100 workers, equipped with safety gear, began a trial run for the incineration of 10 metric tonnes of toxic waste from the Bhopal Gas tragedy site at Pithampur in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district on Thursday. Amid tight security of 650 police personnel and special armed force (SAF) jawans, the operation at Union Carbide India Limited moved into its main phase on Friday, with the waste being placed in the rotary kiln for combustion. Pithampur, a large industrial hub in Dhar district, witnessed violent protests last week after 337 tonnes of hazardous waste from the defunct factory in Bhopal was brought to Ramky Enviro unit for incineration. Talking to PTI, Gautam Kothari, president of Pithampur Industrial Association, said, “The attendance of workers in factories dropped by 5 to 7 per cent between January 3 and 6 after the protests began in Pithampur. Chemical waste weighing 337 tonnes had been lying in the factory premises, where the Bhopal gas tragedy of December 1984 broke out. It was transported to Pithampur, an industrial town 35 km from Indore, for disposal at an incineration facility. However, residents and activists have long protested against shifting the waste to Pithampur in Dhar district, raising apprehensions of contamination of soil and water bodies.
