In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Interior said the incident was caused by a “technical malfunction” during operations. “Qatari authorities have confirmed that 12 Indian nationals have unfortunately passed away in the Ras Laffan incident yesterday night. We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the departed souls,” the Indian Embassy in Doha said in a post on X on Monday. The identities of the deceased are not known yet. Photo: Special Arrangement Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture between NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited has commenced Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) of Unit-3 (660 MW) of the 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project. According to NLCIL, the Unit-3 was successfully synchronised with the grid on April 3, 2026 marking a major milestone towards commissioning of the final unit of the project. The first coal firing was achieved on April 22. Subsequently, Unit-3 achieved Full Load Operation on May 6. The 72-hour full-load trial operation of the Unit-3 was completed successfully on June 13 in a smooth and uninterrupted manner, leading to the declaration of Commercial Operation effective from June 13, and marking the successful completion of NLCIL’s first supercritical thermal power project. Police said some of the injured workers suffered grievously. A fire broke out at the captive power plant section of a steel manufacturing unit in Chhattisgarh‘s Raipur district in the early hours of Tuesday (June 2, 2026), police said. No casualties were reported in the blaze that erupted at Mivaan Steel’s plant under the Mandir Hasaud police station area, an official said. The blaze sent thick plumes of smoke billowing into the sky, visible from kilometres away, he said. According to preliminary information, the fire started following an oil leak from a turbine generator’s control-line pipe, which quickly ignited as a steam line also passed close to the affected area, he said. While the Fire Department contained the blaze within a few hours, the police have launched a probe to ascertain the exact sequence of events and assess the extent of the property damage, the official said.
