A PNG gas pipeline was damaged during road construction work at Kumarapuram here on Tuesday afternoon, causing a leak. An officer from Chackai fire station said that information of the gas leak was received around 12.50 pm and a team was immediately dispatched to the area. He further said that the valve of the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) pipeline was closed immediately and the personnel of the fire and rescue service are overseeing the repair work. “Once the remaining gas from the pipe is expelled, the repair work will be carried out,” the officer said. The supply of LPG to domestic households has been prioritised and cylinders are being delivered normally with no reports of dry outs at LPG distributorships, according to an official update issued by Petroleum Ministry on Tuesday.  More than 5.01 lakh PNG connections have been gasified so far since March this year while over 5.68 lakh customers have been registered for new connections. Around 39,400 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections via MYPNGD.in website, the statement said. Over 19.28 lakh 5-kg LPG cylinders, used mainly by migrant workers, have also been sold since March 23. A total of 1,23,680 metric tonnes (MT) (equivalent to more than 65 lakh of 19 Kg LPG cylinders) of commercial LPG has been sold during April so far. The equivalent of more than 4.64 lakh 19-Kg commercial LPG cylinders was sold on Monday. The government on Thursday said that the supply of LPG to households continues without disruption, even as global conditions impact logistics. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, online bookings for LPG have risen to 98 per cent, and no shortages have been reported at distributorships. The ministry said, “Supply of LPG to domestic households remains normal… and no dry-outs have been reported.” It also added that 100 per cent supply is being ensured for domestic LPG, piped natural gas (PNG), and CNG for vehicles. Technology helps prevent misuse Officials said the use of Delivery Authentication Codes (DAC) has improved transparency in distribution. Currently, around 92 per cent of deliveries are being completed using DAC verification, helping prevent diversion of cylinders at the distributor level. Consumers have also been encouraged to use digital booking platforms instead of visiting distributors. Amid the concerning LPG crisis since the West Asia conflict, the Maharashtra government on Friday directed city gas distribution companies to activate 24/7 helplines and increase the number of centres processing applications for piped natural gas connections. While the impact of the West Asia crisis on global energy supply chains has been immense, a Government Resolution (GR), issued by the Food and Civil Supplies Department on Friday, instructed companies to expand outreach and infrastructure to ensure wider PNG coverage across the state, as per PTI.  As reported by news agency PTI, the GR said disruptions in global energy supply have affected petroleum product availability, leading to constraints in LPG supply, and emphasised the need to accelerate PNG connections as a short-term mitigation measure. Municipal bodies in Gurugram have been directed to grant approvals for laying piped natural gas (PNG) pipelines within 24 hours, in a bid to accelerate infrastructure rollout and address gaps in connectivity, officials said. From granting clearances to permitting 24×7 work, the civic body has directed ward offices to fast-track PNG connections till June 30. In a circular issued on March 30, the BMC has said that all pending applications from MGL, which provides PNG in Mumbai jurisdiction, will now be deemed “approved”, directing ward offices to permit work while also calling them to issue permits for new applications within 24 hours. To ensure faster access to PNG supply, the civic body has permitted MGL to work 24×7 till June 30.“The condition of obtaining NOC from CFO and Traffic Police is temporarily relaxed and work can be carried out by intimating work schedule daily to the CFO and Traffic Police,” reads the circular issued by the municipal commissioner. More than 3.1 lakh PNG connections covering domestic, commercial, hostel, and canteen segments have been gasified in March, while another 2.7 lakh new connections have been given and are being gasified to make more natural gas available for cooking amid disruptions in LPG imports due to the Iran war, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry announced on Tuesday.  More than 50 lakh domestic LPG cylinders are being delivered daily on average since March 1, 2026, and no `dryouts` have been reported at LPG distributorships. Besides, over 3.2 lakh 5 kg cylinders have been sold to migrant labourers since March 23, with more than 63,000 sold on Monday, a ministry statement said. In the case of piped natural gas (PNG) and CNG for vehicles, priority has been accorded to consumers with 100 per cent supply to meet demand.
