The inspector had got in contact with some chikdren in connection with a case. | Photo Credit: Illustratu9n by Satheesh Vellinezhi A police sub-inspector attached to Amruthahalli Police Station in Bengaluru was arrested on June 29 after being booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, for allegedly sexually abusing minor boys under the guise of interrogation. Police said the alleged incident took place about a year ago when the officer, identified as Praveen, had detained the boys in connection with a murder investigation. He is accused of taking them to a lodge, assaulting them and forcing them into performing obscene acts, which he allegedly recorded on his mobile phone. The case came to light after videos of the alleged abuse surfaced on social media. Following this, Amruthahalli police registered a suo motu case under the POCSO Act, 2012, and the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. The investigation was later transferred to Kothanur Police Station. A special POCSO court in Rangareddy district convicted a gymnastics and karate coach and a private school principal in a 2019 child sexual abuse case registered by Miyapur police, sentencing the coach to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and the principal to three years of simple imprisonment. The court convicted Kura Kiran Sai, 31, a gymnastics and karate coach, for sexually assaulting a three-and-a-half-year-old girl under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a term of not less than 20 years and fined ₹20,000. The second accused, Chilakamukku Deepika, 37, principal of the private school where the incident occurred, was convicted for negligence and sentenced to three years of simple imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1,000. The court also awarded compensation of ₹3 lakh to the victim. According to the police, the case was registered on June 27, 2019, following a complaint by the victim’s father citing that his daughter had shown signs of distress after returning from preschool and was unwilling to attend school. …

Man ‘assaults’ minor girl, pushes her off apartment roof

In a gruesome incident, a 49-year-old man allegedly assaulted a 12-year-old girl before pushing her from the roof of a residential apartment in Khammam three days ago, leaving her seriously injured with fractured ribs. The shocking incident came to light after the grievously injured girl regained consciousness at a city-based hospital where she is undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to sources, the traumatised girl reportedly narrated the horrific incident to her parents late on Monday night following which the latter lodged a complaint against the accused identified as Mohammed Ghouse, a truck driver. Sources said that Ghouse allegedly targeted the minor girl who had been staying with her family members at the apartment complex, where her grandfather is working as a watchman, for the past few days. The accused allegedly pushed the girl off the roof of the apartment complex after assaulting her when she reportedly resisted his rape attempt by raising an alarm, sources added. The Gauhati High Court has recently acquitted two men accused of sexual assault and held that the survivor had not specified what she meant by ‘bad deeds’ done to her and “unless the word ‘bad act’ is clarified, the word can have a host of meanings”. A bench of justices Michael Zothankhuma and Sanjeev Kumar Sharma was hearing the plea of the accused that “the evidence of the victim was not reliable” as there was contradiction in the same. The court held in agreement that evidence of the survivor was insufficient and the same needs more support. The judgement dated May 26 read that “unless there is clarification of the word ‘bad act’, the exact deed done to the victim is left open-ended and is not decisive of which illegal act has been inflicted upon the victim.” The bench held that the prosecution had not been able to prove the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt. ‘Bad deeds’ The court noted that the survivor had not explained as to what she meant when she …

Archery Coach Kuldeep Vedwan sentenced to five years in prison in POCSO Case

A Fast Track Special Court in Sonipat has sentenced national-level archery coach Kuldeep Vedwan to five years of rigorous imprisonment in a sexual harassment case involving a minor female archer. The court convicted Vedwan under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and also imposed a fine of ₹15,000. Along with the five-year sentence under Section 10 of the Act, the court awarded an additional three-year sentence under Section 12. Both sentences will run concurrently. The case stemmed from an incident reported during Youth Championship trials held at a Sports Authority of India centre in Sonipat in April 2023. The athlete had travelled from Jammu and Kashmir, where she was training at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Katra Stadium, an institution associated with Vedwan’s coaching foundation. Bandi Sai Bhageerath, son of a Union minister, on Saturday surrendered before the Telangana police on Saturday evening, hours after the high court declined to grant any immediate relief to him from arrest in a case registered against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act over allegations of sexual harassment of a minor girl. Cyberabad police commissioner Ramesh Reddy said Bhageerath was arrested at Narsingi late in the evening and was being taken to Pet Basheerabad police station. In its order delivered on Tuesday, a bench of Justices Salil Kumar Rai and Dr Ajay Kumar II also questioned the prosecution for not examining the doctor who conducted the medical examination of the girl and the trial court for not summoning the doctor as a court witness to explain the medico-legal report.
