Pregnant woman ends her life in Polavaram dist.

A 28-year-old pregnant woman allegedly ended her life due to physical harassment by her husband suspecting her infidelity at Tekulaboru village of Kunavaram mandal in Chintoor agency on Sunday. The woman, Boddu Sandhya of Koya tribe, is in her third trimester and expected to deliver baby in June. “Sandhya’s husband, Akhil has been harassing her, suspecting her fidelity. On Sunday, she has ended her life at her residence,” Kunavaram Sub-Inspector B. Ramakrishna told The Hindu over phone. The police have recovered the body of Sandhya and sent it to Kunavaram government hospital. The Kunavaram SI said that Mr. Akhil has been taken into custody and the investigation is under way. Those suffering from suicidal tendencies in the Chintoor agency can contact police at 9490617850. A view of the Polavaram irrigation project. | Photo Credit: File Photo The Water Resources Department has dismissed the comments made by the Center for Liberty regarding quality and alleged unauthorised design changes in the Polavaram irrigation project. The department, in a press release, said that the Diaphragm Wall (D-Wall) was constructed by an internationally reputed firm, BAUER Group. Though concrete bleeding had been noticed during the early stages of construction, remedial measures suggested by IIT-Tirupati were implemented. Subsequent core sample tests confirmed that the concrete quality met the required standards, and this was verified by the Panel of Experts in January 2026, the release said. On the issue of height adjustments, the department explained that the D-Wall top level was revised to 18.50 metres based on designs prepared by the AFRY to ensure a three-metre embedment into the core. It emphasised that the modification was a technical engineering decision and not an attempt to conceal defective work. Polavaram Authority writes to CWC for drainage congestion study of 6 streams

HYDERABAD As being demanded for long by the Telangana government, the Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) has written to the Central Water Commission (CWC) to take up a drainage congestion study of six streams in Telangana due to the Polavaram project. In a letter addressed to the CWC Chairman recently, the PPA said technical meetings chaired by the CWC Chairman were held on October 7, 2022; January 25, 2023; April 3, 2023 and August 28, 2024 following the Supreme Court directions dated September 6, 2022 on the inter-state issues of Polavaram project. During the meetings, Telangana raised issues regarding submergence on account of Polavaram project and it was concluded that demarcating the areas affected due to submergence along Kinnerasani and Murreduvagu rivers be taken up as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal orders of September 18, 2020. Further, it was decided to take up a joint survey in respect of 6-7 big streams joining below the full reservoir level of Polavaram project in Telangana to check the backwater effect of the project, to check …

Construction of the diaphragm wall will be completed by the year-end, says Minister for Water Resources Nimmala Rama Naidu Water Resource Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu on Monday announced that the construction of the Earth-Cum-Rock Fill (ECRF) dam of the Polavaram irrigation project across river Godavari commenced parallel to the construction of the new diaphragm wall as recommended by the Central Water Commission (CWC). The Central team comprising B. Siddharth Hedaoo and Vipul Kumar Gupta, along with Water Resources Department and Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) representatives, visited the project site. The expert team tested the quality of soil at different places on the project site, and gathered samples during their two-day visit. They examined the soil at the spillway and other places. Samples would be tested in the CSMRS laboratory, they said. Water Resources Department Divisional Engineer V. Nirmala, Executive Engineer V. All the 14,000 evacuee families, mostly Koyas and Konda Reddi tribes from the Godavari Valley, are under the jurisdiction of the Chintoor Integrated Tribal Development Authority (ITDA) and living in the four mandals that were merged from Telangana with Andhra Pradesh in the aftermath of the State bifurcation. The residents of the four merged mandals of Chintoor, Kunavaram, V.R. On the occasion, the Union Minister assured that the Centre would extend all help to complete the Polavaram irrigation project as per the deadlines. During the meeting, Mr. Ramanaidu presented a report regarding the State’s water resources, ongoing works, and the required assistance. Responding positively, the Union Minister told Mr. Ramanaidu that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was paying special attention to the Polavaram project, and promised that he would visit the project soon. Mr. Ramanaidu said the State government wanted to complete construction of the diaphragm wall by December 2025 and the entire irrigation project by December 2027. The diaphragm wall construction had already begun with two cutters, and from March, work would begin with a third cutter, he said, and requested the Union Minister to extend support in the construction of the earth-cum-rockfill (ECRF) parallel to the diaphragm wall. Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu insists on completion of Polavaram project by December 2027

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu chairing a review meeting on Irrigation Department at the Secretariate on Thursday. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has stressed the need for completion of the Polavaram irrigation project by December 2027. “Delay in completion of the projects that have approvals and funding will not be tolerated. By the time the Polavaram project begins to show results, the Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanti project should become operational,” Mr. Naidu said at a review meeting on the Water Resources Department on Thursday. Mr. Naidu said the previous YSRCP government had neglected the irrigation sector and the NDA government was trying to take corrective measures. “The objective is to provide water to the people. Irrigation works must proceed with set goals in mind. Especially for projects such as Polavaram, daily, monthly, and overall targets must be met. If the targets are not met, both officials and contractors will be held accountable,” he said. Members of Parliamentary Standing Committee visit Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh

The Union Jal Sakthi Parliamentary Standing Committee (2024-25), led by its Chairperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy, arrived at the Polavaram project site on Saturday to review the progress of the irrigation project. Andhra Pradesh’s Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu explained to the committee the status of the works. Stating that the project was the lifeline for the State, Mr. Ramanaidu said 72% of the work had been completed during the previous tenure of the TDP government (2014-19). The Minister further said the goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was interlinking of rivers. The committee would study the cofferdam, diaphragm wall, and spillway channel, and submit its findings to the Parliament. The members of the committee included Khiru Mahto and Dharmasheela Gupta from Rajya Sabha, and R.
