The duo, who train together at the Madhya Pradesh Academy, broke the national record twice and equalled it once. It was Meena who first cleared 5.42m, improving the national mark set by Kuldeep earlier this year by a centimetre. Minutes later, Kuldeep went past the 5.45m mark to reclaim the national record. Meena was not done for the day and equalled the mark to share bragging rights. Both attempted 5.50m but couldn’t clear the mark. Meena won the gold medal on countback as his second-best attempt was 5.42m while Kuldeep’s was 5.30m. “We had the 5.50m mark in mind when we came here. We went for that but I’m glad that our boys could improve the national record,” said Ghanshyam Yadav, the coach who trains both athletes. Baranica cleared 4.23m to better her own previous national record of 4.22m set at the inaugural edition of National Indoor Championships held in the last week of March at the same venue. The 29-year-old crossed 4.23m on her third attempt.”It was another good day for me,” said Baranica who has shifted base from Tamil Nadu to Bhubaneswar. He cleared the mark of 5.41m in his first attempt and decided to go for 5.46m but failed to cross that mark. He broke the national recod of 5.40m set last year by Dev Kumar Meena and also improved the national indoor record of 5.30m set earlier in March by Reegan G of Tamil Nadu. This was first time that Kuldeep has participated in an indoor Pole Vault competition. “It was a good day for me. It was a good experience today,” said Kuldeep Kumar after making the national record. Pavithra Vengatesh clinches pole vault gold with personal best effort

Pavithra Vengatesh of Tamil Nadu came close to breaking the national record but fell short of the mark as she clinched the gold medal in the women’s pole vault at the third India Open Jumps competition in Bengaluru on Wednesday. Pavithra, however, returned with a personal best effort of 4.15m, falling 7cm short of Roy Meena Paulraj’s national record of 4.21m achieved in 2022 at the National Open athletics championships. Pavithra had crossed the 4.22m thrice, but all of her efforts were red-flagged by the line judge. In a field, where no other athlete managed to cross the four metres mark, the 22-year-old, who won the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships silver in 2023, clinched the yellow metal by bettering her PB of 4.10m by 5cm. Mariya Jaison of Kerala bagged the silver medal with a 3.80m jump, which is much lower than her personal best of 3.90m. Sindhushree G of Karnataka won the bronze medal.
